Allies Rush In Defences To Vilnius Ahead Of NATO Summit As Fear Of Wagner Fighters In Belarus Builds

NATO has turned Vilnius into a fortress defended by its combined forces of advanced weaponry to protect US President Joe Biden and other alliance leaders. NATO leaders will be meeting on July 11-12 in Vilnius, just 32 km from Lithuania's border with Russian ally Belarus. NATO allies are providing advanced air defence systems to Lithuania for the event, since the Baltic state itself lacks the required level of security. The Baltic countries of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, once under Moscow's rule, have been part of both NATO and the European Union since 2004. These Baltic nations all spend above 2% of their economies on defence, a larger share than most other NATO allies. However, for a region with a total population of about 6 million people, this is not enough to sustain large militaries or invest in advanced air capabilities. Russia's backyard, wherever that is supposed to be, should be within Russia's internationally recognized borders. If it's their yard, it's their territory. Lithuania is not in Russia's backyard. A non-clickbait headline would read something like, "Lithuania is preparing for a NATO summit it it's own backyard."
