I’m not surprised at all. Remember how Prigozhin was heading towards Moscow with just a few thousand men and not much heavy equipment? Russia had no way of stopping him, and Putin had to flee. It showed that once Ukraine could break through the Russian lines that it would have be easy sailing from there on. Putin is in a very difficult situation. He can pull troops out of Ukraine where Russian troops have made slow but steady advances, or he can let Ukraine continue to take large chunks of Russian territory with very little opposition. If he decides to use nukes that won’t solve anything either. It will just piss off the Ukrainian people more, and it will result in direct NATO intervention. Russia knows that’s not a war it can win. It will be interesting to see how all this all plays out in the next few months before the US elections.

The interesting thing to note here is that Russia unlike in WW2 it has a far more extensive road network than back then. This makes it far easier to advance massive distances on asphault vs the dirt roads that the Nazis had to traverse in WW2.

Kursk use to be part of Ukraine, and a lot of people still speak Ukrainian they viewed the Ukrainians as liberators and showed them where the Russians were hiding, and their positions, this is why the Ukrainians moved so fast.
