A collapsed dam in northern Nigeria has caused severe floods in Borno state, affecting almost 1 million people, according to the state governor.

Fifteen per cent of the state capital, Maiduguri, is under water. The dam was at full capacity due to unusually high rains, according to the state government. The floods have killed more than 80% of the animals in a large zoo that houses wildlife from lions and crocodiles to buffalo and ostriches

When problems arise, we often scramble for solutions. However, siltation is an inherent issue in dams, gradually reducing reservoir storage capacity. Was regular maintenance performed on this dam since its construction, including reservoir dredging, desilting of the outlet channel and Spillway maintenance. etc.
A dam breach analysis during the design phase would have recommended maintenance strategies to mitigate flood hazards. Unfortunately, Nigeria tends to neglect hydraulic structure maintenance. While climate change exacerbates issues, proper maintenance can still alleviate adverse community impacts. A dam of this magnitude requires at least: Monthly or quarterly inspections of the spillway, reservoir, and outlet channel conditions, regular dredging and desilting to maintain storage capacity, spillway maintenance to ensure safe overflow.
