I am in a similar situation but I had some existing steps in a smaller section. When I removed those the joist they were butted up against was completely rotted! Moral of the story is, you got to give the water somewhere else to go rather than your wood. Some people stack washers. There are specialty "spacers" but you got to give the water some where to go. I hope that helps!

This video has been so helpful! We have the exact same situation going on as we’ve knocked down one of our deck walls so it is more open to the yard. Ready to build our step after this video! Ty!

Nice work on the step and the paver patio Lara. I have a similar situation but have an awkward rise of 17" to split with a step, so going to raise my pavers to bring it down to 16" (8" rise for step and deck) then build a box just as you did. Thank-you!

I thought you might include the materials you used in your description for those of us with little to no experience but I didn't see anything listed. I heard you say you used Paver Base. How many bags of that base material did you have to use and were those just any rocks you used? Sorry I am new to all this! LOL!

Paver base goes over the stone (which should also be compacted). Paver base, by name, goes under (hypothetical) pavers as it can be set to a grade, not a rough stone surface.

Freaking genius! But do you not have frost heave where you live? And hopefully those boards were pressure treated going right against the rock. .or else you'll have rotting stairs within a few years depending on your rainfall and climate. Just my annoying structural engineer comments. Who asked right? Carry on! Literally stealing this build. (Watched with no sound as to not wake up sleeping wife, so sorry if you addressed this!)
