The Aggressive Vocalist's Master Plan of Attack:

Is there a useful relationship between vocal fry and fry screaming? YES there is! ...But it might not be what you'd expect. I get this sort of question a lot from first time private students as well as general messages and inquiries.

Vocal fry is a gateway to all sorts of amazing vocal sounds and sensations if you know how to use it correctly AND... The big one: How to combine it with other techniques and sensations! In this video, I show you exactly how to make good use of vocal fry while also getting rid of some of the confusion surrounding FRY... and fry SCREAMING. I hope you like the new lesson!

If I’m being honest with you, Chris: Out of all the vocal teachers on YouTube, you are probably the only one whom I’ve listened to and actually improved my singing. I’d only expect this kind of information on a $30/month course, and you give it absolutely freely. I’ve been genuinely inspired and encouraged to practice everyday. I still thank God for the day I found your channel- thank u Chris, I won’t fail to acknowledge you when I become famous, I promise😊🙏🏻🥀

Fry screaming is a term I introduced in 2004. It is a non-periodic pulse register only like vocal fry in speech science because of its aperiodicity BUT VERY DIFFERENT because there is NO engagement of the aryepiglottic folds or false cords. Fry screaming is achieved ONLY by the engagement of the vocal ligament (mode 2) without the weight of additional muscular layers in the folds. The huge advantage of acquiring this coordination is the 5-10k hertz capability which is perceptualy much louder without the effort. I propose that this is because too much vocal fold mass/weight cannot pulse fast enough to create these higher partials. Another huge advantage to fry screaming is the seamless transition between pitch and noise. This is because everything occurs at the true fold source without constriction allowing more compelling resonating strategies. Constriction prevents resonance in the posterior vocal tract. The source of the noise is from the aryepiglottic folds colliding with the epiglottis- there is a big adjustment to remove and replace noise within a lyric. It is not incorrect if done with a stability between subglottal pressure and laryngeal position, but I have observed is def not sustainable for lighter voices. It's also harder to mix in a track without a ton of EQ.
False cord screaming is a term I made up, which refers exclusively to constriction. There is also Hybrid, the term I use to describe when voice is making pitch in the anterior (front) portion of the folds mixed with fry in the posterior portion. Hybrid sounds like false cord but without the heavy lifting. Many artists have moved to this strategy by better coordination inspired by a need for heavy touring sustainability. The 4th strategy I labeled as "Death" because in the early millennium, bands tribalized sub genres of metal and that sound, comprising of blasts of air combined with a depressed laryngeal posture (ie Cookie Monster) Never meant to compartmentalize- I have observed that learning fry screaming and hybrid first will make the constriction strategies more sustainable. I love your vids- just thought I might clarify any confusion here🤘🏻

Random thought... if a person from France uses vocal fry, would it be considered a French fry? 🤔

For some reason, every time I watch your videos, I think I've finally unlocked my screaming voice as I try...and just 10 mins later, its gone

as a singer and voice teacher myself this is HANDS DOWN the best video I have seen about vocal fry and its relationship with fry screams. I have a neurological voice disorder called Spasmodic Dysphonia so for me my vocal fry is inaccessible when the "supraglottal squeeze" kicks in due to having the issue but on good days I can relax my voice down into the vocal fry register and can get a little fry scream going and it seems its getting more and more consistent as the days goes by. I have no issues with doing distortions, arynetoid distortions, even false folds screams but the fry scream always got me and I never saw any videos on YouTube that personally helped me except your videos including this one so Thank you so much for putting out such great contents for all of us.
Keep these amazing videos coming! bless you Chris! like 486 from me 🙏👍👍😀😀

I've been trying this technique for 4 months now, and I've just learnt, right now in my room, how to make this sound efficient, thanks to this video! THANKS TO YOU! Now I need to practice more to make this work on various pitches and keeping it in control, but I'm not worried because I'm buying your course for this, definitely. Best voice teacher on YouTube.

You’re the only YouTube vocal coach that I’ve seen who actually helped me gain range and control. Like over an octave gained. I like digging into these type of lessons as well, you make a lot of sense dude. Wish I could afford the class right now, one day!

Man, I’ve been doing metal vocals for about 16 years, I do amazing false chords, but for all of these years I could never get the hang of fry screaming. For some reason I always tense up to much.
