As a compact luxury SUV, the Cadillac XT5 aims for broad appeal. Unfortunately, it lacks some key attributes needed to compete successfully against impressive vehicles like the BMW X3, Mercedes-AMG GLC43, and Volvo XC60. The XT5's cabin is spacious and comfortable and it offers a refined ride, but its appeal is otherwise limited. Buyers can choose from either a turbocharged four-cylinder or a V-6 engine, but loading up the XT5 with options quickly pushes its price tag to Porsche Macan territory—an area where the XT5 is even more out of its depth.
What's New for 2021?
The XT5 receives a number of new standard features for 2021, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, Amazon Alexa integration, and an upgraded digital display in the gauge cluster. Elsewhere, the XT5's exterior cameras get upgraded to provide better picture quality, a more robust wireless charging pad and USB-C charging outlets have been added, and a feature that uses Near Field Communication to pair smartphones in just one step joins the list. Starting in 2021, Cadillac will also offer a handful of more advanced driver-assistance features, including night vision, rear pedestrian alert, and improved automatic parking assist.
With no shortage of choices in the small-luxury SUV marketplace, the Cadillac XT4 will appeal to buyers who value a sharp-edged design, a spacious interior, and a traditionally upright, SUV-like driving position. All models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and either front- or all-wheel drive. The cabin has a modern appearance with plenty of standard and optional technology and infotainment features, but overall refinement isn't quite on the same level as the XT4's key rivals, which includes the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class. If you overlook its down-market interior materials, the XT4 remains a practical and stylish option in this popular segment.
What's New for 2021?
Cadillac has made only a few minor changes to the XT4 for 2021, starting with the base Luxury trim, which receives a new standard power rear liftgate and the option of leather upholstery. An optional Driver Awareness package that includes automatic high-beam headlamps and lane-keeping assist has also been added to the Luxury trim. The Sport trim receives red-painted brake calipers, and both it and the Premium Luxury model come with new exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals. Two new colors join the available palette: Infrared Tintcoat and Wave Metallic.
