Ficus Benjamina Care Guide ~ Bushy King ~ Weeping Fig

If you have just picked up one of these beautiful plants and want to know how to look after it then this is the video for you. I’m going to go through a full care guide and also tell you the one thing that you really mustn’t do with these plants which will certainly cause it to die.

Light: Bright Indirect light – more light than less, not direct midday sun but will tolerate some direct sun.

Soil: Good drainage soil with some grit - cactus mix will work.

Fertilizer: Feed once per month in the summer with a general-purpose feed

Pruning: Prune them a few times in the summer for your own taste, this will encourage a more compact growth or leave it to do its own thing and it will create more of a weeping look.

Watering:– will tolerate being a little dry for a while better than too wet.

THE ONE THING: Don’t leave it to sit in water – prone to root rot – better a little dry than constantly wet.

I just did my first propagation attempt via cuttings. They are stupid easy and successfully did it the first time around. Did it for science reasons just to see if I could do it.

Here in the Philippines, ficus benjamina grows well in 8-hour strong direct sunlight.. their leaves are healthy green in direct full sun.

That’s a nice looking plant you show off in the beginning. How tall will that be able to get? Is there a way to know how tall my own ficus can grow to?
Does it need to be repotted in order to grow taller?

I dream of having a very tall ficus inside my home.

I bought one of these plants but my plant has only one stem, and I was wondering how you got yours to look so pretty with three stems also. Can you use these plants for bonsai

Hello, I inherited a ficus Benjamina when we bought our current house.
This was three years ago
It has been doing OK.
Before I made an effort to learn how to care for it it’s gone through some ups and downs a couple times dropping leaves

At the moment, it seems happy and I am always seeing new growth these days.

I’m wondering whether I should repot it because it came in a pot with no drainage. I’m also not sure if it’s got an ideal soil.

I would love to see my plant thrive and not merely survive

Let me know if it would be too risky to repot it and maybe just better to be extra careful with watering.

Another question : if it went through a time of dropping its leaves, will those branches stay or will leaves come back to those branches? Should I clip those dry twiggy branches?

Hello again. Don’t mean to pester you but do you have any special advice for repotting this plant or is it same as any other plant?
I commented earlier that I inherited one of these with my house and haven’t given it any special care yet. It is in a pot with no drainage.
I have had this plant more than three years and who knows how long the previous owner had it! The plant looks healthy but I assume it would do better to be repotted! Please send me advice.

Can you propagate the benjamina from the cuttings?

HI, I just bought a ficus carica (it has already four figs!) it's a small plant about 45cms tall and I re potted it.
I'm keeping it indoors on my window as I have no outdoors. My question is what do you recommend to use as a fertilizer? Thank you.

When you say direct sunlight, do you mean indoors? Or out? Modern windows have UV protected glass. Is that still considered direct sunlight?

I have one of these growing against a retaining wall. Will the roots destroy the wall?

I’ve heard this plant does not like being moved. What about occasionally rotating the plant to expose all sides to the light?

I am confused. How can that be just two plants combined when it has three braided stems?

Look where ficuses are from and where they grow, most of the varieties love to be in the direct sun. 😊 apart from this one point, that I don't really agree with, it's a great video I lots of good tips. Especially the watering technique is spot on!❤
