Absolute genius to stand still. Because even an averagely smart person might have thought they have a chance to back away right at the start, but wouldn't have gotten more than 50m away from where they were standing. This decision to hold out behind luckily a solid bit of rocks saved all the hikers. Had it been loose rocks or they tried to run even 100m they'd be dead.
