Saving New Zealand's prehistoric giant weta - earthrise

New Zealand is rich in wildlife and, because of its isolation, there are hundreds of plants and animals that evolved here that cannot be found anywhere else.

But human-introduced pests have threatened and even wiped out many species.

One of those is the native wetapunga which has been around for 190 million years and used to be found all over New Zealand. But now these big insects are on the brink of extinction.

In a bid to save the species, the Auckland Zoo has launched a set of projects - including an interactive exhibition to inform and excite the next generation about the "weta", one of the world's heaviest insects that can weigh up to 70 grams.

"They are fascinating and people just dismiss them. But not only that, they're really, really important for the environment. I mean, it's how everything works together, and without insects, we wouldn't be here," says Kirsty Macfarlane, a guide at the Auckland Zoo Learning Centre, who strongly believes in the importance of raising awareness among children.

They're the future, right? So, they're the ones who are going to have be helping to keep insects safe and to stop them from becoming endangered. If they can really connect with insects at that young age and fall in love with them, I guess, then that will be great for our future," she says.

I didn't know weta were endangered. This is incredible! I am so happy the island owners have dedicated their land to the weta and other species instead of bulldozing the forest to make a big house or something. I wish I lived in NZ.

All the people saying they've seen them or that they're common are just seeing other species and getting them confused. We have the same problem in Texas where a certain species of salamander is endangered and yet I have old farts walk up to me and tell me they're so common they use them as fishing bait. Species are not interchangeable and just because something that looks similar is common doesn't meant the endangered thing is not worth saving.

New Zealand: Great accent. Island nation. Awesome wildlife. Home of LotR. And again, awesome wildlife (giant crickets).

Man, why don't I live there? I'm so mad at myself right now, I've made such poor life choices xD .

I wish more people could look past their instincts and see that bugs are really cool! Unless it's something like a termite that can knock a house down, insects are harmless little fellas who'll let you appreciate them as long as you don't annoy them. Heck, a wasp or bee that stung you probably thought of you the same way you think of a fly that lands on your leg.

Just pulled one out of my washing tub. He mandibles were so hard you could hear her crunching into it. They are everywhere here. So feel free to dig around my house lmao.
