We've all been there, starting to explore the wide, wide world of texts outside the safety of your textbook, but the first manga you pick up.... is just too hard. You google children's books, and they only take you 10 minutes to read and you don't feel NE smurtr. How do you approach a lifelong habit of foreign language reading? Well, I'mma teach ya that, silly.

"You google children's books, and they only take you 10 minutes to read" the correct answer is 2 hours*

As someone that passed N1 10 years ago, I agree with your approach of varying up reading materials and levels. I still switch between manga, novels, social media. I think it's good to sometimes read for total understanding, looking up in a dictionary, others just read through without worrying and getting the gist.

The analogy of weight training being similar to reading is almost as adorable as you are. I'm both training to run more and to improve my reading on French classics. For my easy reads, I play video games with a lot of dialogue like ACNL or Pokémon in French. Keep up with this reading topic. Bisous!

I love hearing you talk about reading techniques; I honestly don't see other people talking about using different levels of materials to stimulate different reading skillsets. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Just stumbled upon this video! Definitely going to try and vary my reading as I tend to fry my brain when immediately jumping to something difficult. Thanks for the video :D

To do list for reading Japanese:
1. Learn Hiragana and Katakana.
2. Memorize the first 2000 words on the Anki Japanese vocab list.
( These will be the 2000 most frequently used words in Japanese. That's about 90% of spoken Japanese. 🙂)
3. Learn the first 400 Kanji in James Hessig's book. ( This will be all of the radicals, fragments, and the most frequently used Kanji. )

Starting with a solid base in this material will make reading much easier. The Manga will have furigana to help you with the readings.
Six words a day will get you to 2000 words in a year. You should go much faster than that.
One Kanji a day will get you 365 in a year. You should go much faster than that too.
It won't happen over night. It will happen if you keep at it.

Hi! I totally agree with you when you said that your'd increase your reading skills by reading. Once I thought about buying a manga written in japanese but I didn't do it because I thought it would be too hard for me. After watching your video, I'm buying it! What is second book's name (the blue one)? Could you recommend other books that are at the intermediate level?

I would agree. It is probably better to learn the conversational form of the language, rather than the textbook language. That can come later. It's how we learn languages anyway and it is much more practical on top.

Do you have recommendations by level? This is actually a really good video and I'm going to try this approach.
