I've got a fair amount of personal experience as a customer but today, I'd like to introduce an expert, someone who's been in the menswear retail space
for over 15 years.

Now with that being said, let's get right into our topic for today, the seven big mistakes men make when shopping in retail.

Number one, not shopping with a purpose. It's helpful to think about what is the reason for this purchase when you go out shopping. I find it helpful to keep my wardrobe from bursting at the seams, think about what this item could end up replacing, what could I remove or end up donating or selling to make room for this new piece that I am bringing in.

Number two, people also forget to do their research when they go shopping. Let's say, hypothetically, you happen to see a suit online on GQ or through Pinterest and it happens to be retailing for about $4,500, now you could A. go directly to that designer's website and purchase it through them immediately or you could also wait a little while longer and save some money. How upsetting would it be for you to find out that if you had just waited a little while longer, you could have saved nearly 50% on that outfit.

Number three, have you checked the clearance section first? One of the main things I was taught when I was growing up about shopping was the importance of not wasting money. I remember my parents always saying "look for the best for less" or "search for the top of the line for bottom dollar". Now this didn't mean that we could never spend money on nice things but just to not go spending money frivolously on things that we just did not need.

Number four, not taking advantage of seasonality. Now, we've all been to the mall or to different stores and seen the advertisements for the new items at the beginning of the season. I don't know about you but for me, it can certainly be very tempting to buy all those brand new things right there, right on the spot. However, there is a way to avoid the trap of overspending. Are you on a tight budget? If so, try shopping out of season. For example, try shopping for sweaters or coats in the midst of summer or looking for swimming trunks around the time that they're being put on sale when winter things are being sold.

Number 5, not understanding your body type. Now for many of us, it's very easy to see someone that you work with or see someone that you admire, maybe through a magazine or maybe they're a famous actor, and you really admire the way that they dress. Although this is fun to do, it's not realistic! Meaning, if the person, for example, that you're looking at is more muscular or taller or shorter than you, the outfit they are wearing would not translate on you.

Number six, now this is a big one, is this age appropriate? When I was younger, I used to work at places like Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch, now years after I left these companies as I got older, I would still casually wear the sweater, the t-shirts with the obnoxiously big logos and after a while, I started to realize that by looking in the mirror, I looked a bit childish by continuing to wear these brands.

Now number seven, too many opinions. Now shopping can certainly become a group event. Now regardless of who you are, what your normal shopping habits might be, we always like to hear, at some point, the opinion of those we trust around us and what they think of what we're about to purchase. Now although opinions are great, you ultimately will have to be the deciding factor as to what you decide to purchase.

When they added Preston I was very excited to see what new things this was gonna bring to the channel as his look seemed more relaxed than Raphael's approach to menswear, a new perspective certainly improved the channel greatly and I really enjoyed the videos that featured him. Now it goes the same with Kyle! I really enjoy his more modern approach but still remaining timeles I am very excited to see what new things he will bring to this already amazing channel and it's pretty great to see aswell different skin colours as to see what colours look good with different skin tones and hair and form an amazing wardrobe. This channel just keeps getting better!

I appreciate his take and advice on shopping retail. Budgeting is a real thing people do these days. He's very realistic, and down to earth. Looking forward to watching more of Kyle's videos. Hopefully, he doesn't call people peasants like Sven does. 🙄

A good first video Kyle and a great addition to the GG team. As a younger guy, a more modern approach to classic style is really nice to get advice on.

I like Kyle It can be seen clearly that Kyle knows his stuff due to his experience in retail. His calm, measured and non-judgemental style is welcoming and warm, and the fact that he doesn’t have to go crazy with hand gestures, facial expressions or forced variations in voice intonation in order to keep an audience engaged is a testament to his knowledge and expertise.

With a lot of different style channels out there it's common to hear a lot of the same things repeated by different people. But Kyle presented a lot of unique advice I haven't heard a lot of other folks mention before. Well done.

Awesome! Great to see GG Team growing. (And yes, Sven in a Tux drinking Champagne is the man I want to emulate.)

Another good choice. I expected him to present well as he has years of experience of public speaking and one on ones. One note for those on a budget, classic styles never go out of style, only the fads do and quickly.

It's good to have somebody on the team that is into modern, flattering clothes. That has been the one thing missing. The sack suits can only appeal to so many people. Theres a lot more people that are into mens fashion that appreciate a slender, italian silhouette these days. I think adding a more updated point of view to the channel will go a long way. Keep up the good work, boys.
