In this video, we test out 12 PS2 games on the Nvidia Shield Pro using the new Aether SX2 emulator for android. The Tegra X1 CPU is getting old but does it still hold up in 2022?

So it looks like we need Nvidia to release a new Shield with a more powerful SoC. Honestly not sure they will, since the Shield still does what it's originally intended for very well.

1:03 - you can compress your games to CHD or Gzip to reduce game size by almost half per game. Makes storage more manageable.

With the processor in the Shield being so old now, I'd really love to see a Shield 2 come out with something faster than the latest Snapdragon processors. Could be a really great emulation and Android gaming devices again!

Really hoping Nvidia or AMD launch a new ARM chip so we can have a new Shield with modern performance (maybe Sony or Microsoft can take advantage of it as well to compete with the Switch)

Great video, a great demonstration of what the TEGRA X1 is capable of since 2015, the developer of AetherSX2 does not like SHIELD TV or SWITCH and bans people who only mention these devices on their Discord

Even Dreamcast starts to dip if you go to 1080p resolution, the Nvidia shield is awesome but CPU is quite outdated defenitly can run some PS2 games but not the device for it, would say Dreamcast and psp are the limit of what you can play correctly

Best settings for decent speed as of alpha-2228 build is first reset the settings to unsafe mode then in General: Show Notifications; Off. Graphics: GPU Renderer; Vulkan/Upscale Multiplier; 2x Native/Host VSync; On/Sync To Host Refresh Rate; On/TV Shader; Scanline Filter/GPU Palette Conversion; On/Threaded Presentation; On. Audio: Synchronization Mode; Async Mix. Every other setting I left as is. With that I was pretty much getting full speed in games like Outrun 2, Shinobi, Castlevania, Klonoa 2. Heavy games like Virtua Fighter 4 are still slow though. My Shield is also overclocked as well so that most likely gives me a small extra boost

A wonderful video sir! For my use case I actually run PCSX2 and RCPS3 on my Shadow PC shard and connect to it via the Shield! Works pretty well!

It's insane how it's officially a thing to be able to play PS2 games on an android device.
Final Fantasy X works great native on my phone. But loses speed during intense scenes when I bump up the internal resolution to 2k.

It would be interesting to try out PS2 and other emulators running on regular Linux on the Shield without all the CPU consuming Android bloat in the background.
Given than Tegra X1 natively supports true OpenGL (not just ES) and there are Linux drivers available, this should be doable.
Wish they would make a box with some of the newer Tegra chips...

I remember when they had just announced the shield portable I got one, everyone thought it was going to get so much support and Nvidia abandoned it then I bought the shield tablet and that was fun now I only have the portable and the shield tv I'm really hoping they come out with something new the k1 is good but it's basically 7 years old now we desperately need something new :( they've been milking the shield tv for long enough
