Maybe this is the wrong way of thinking about it but I assumed that if the first solution = 0 and the second solution = 0, then adding any number of either of the two is always going to add up to zero too...

what happens when you have things like cos(3x) in front of the second derivative and first derivative like trig functions/exponentials instead of whole integers

Can you use y''-8y'+16y=0 in the same way.
You should get
y= C1e^(4x)+C2e^(4x) right?
But what about y=(C1x+C2)e^(4x), in your previous vedio?
