Why are renters so angry with Labor? - Max Chandler-Mather

Millions of renters are now locked out of home ownership, and stuck with skyrocketing rents on top of that.

Meanwhile Labor and the Liberals are giving $176 billion in tax handouts to property investors over the next decade. Those handouts will turbocharge house prices even further, when instead we could be using that money to actually build, sell and rent homes at prices people could actually afford.

It’s no wonder that people are angry.

Lib /Labor...all controlled by the same puppetmasters, all tarred with the same brush!
Oh, & if you don't remember what the Libs did to us, then you have very short memories!!!

I was homeless for 8 years, committed no crime other than being poor.
All those years lost😢

Max Chandler-Mather is the only Politician in Canberra who speaks the truth! As a renter who has been priced out of the market it's depressing buying a house that's over-valued by 45% to line the pockets of greedy investors.

Angry? We are absolutely livid with this incompetent administration! I will never vote Labor again, for this administration has changed the face of Australia forever.

Negative gearing for investors and captital gain tax need to be reformed.

The housing crisis is challenging enough, but coupled with crippling HECS debt, it all seems rather hopeless for young Australians.

Labor is the enemy of all Renters. Albo is profiting from the Rental Crisis.

And labours still don’t want to get rid of negative gearing and CGT discount. Disgusting labour

I am an early baby boomer, and I think the ownership of multiple houses is disgusting. The rule should be one family, one house to live in. If people want to invest they should invest in Australian businesses, and not in owning multiple houses. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and it is coming to bite the landlords.

You’re making a lot of sense Max . the rest of the greens I’m appalled by ..
His very right I’m seriously angry . I don’t think the current government understands the whole reason why people get out of bed in the morning to go to work is the opportunity to be able to have a crack at the Australian dream. We are living in worse conditions than our parents and grandparents. And for a developed first world country, it’s not good enough.

Thankyou Max. Keep calling these bums out. Worse than tinkering around the edges is the perfect way to describe it. All the policies of Labor and libs are about increasing demand.

Everybody keeps saying it’s a supply and demand issue so why doesn’t he talk more about how we can control the demand side - ie the turbo charged immigration policy? Imagine the immediate impact that would have on property prices and rents if we were to significantly reduce the intake of immigrants to a level that we could support.

Come next election, I hope the two major parties are shaking in their boots. I know I'm going to do my utmost to ensure that happens. I hope Max spotted a few pollies blush with the truth that even our representatives are hoarding that which we on low to middle income, need so desperately!!!

Its simple, 1 million immigrants arrived in australia last year. All these people need houses to rent or buy. Im not against immigration, but it needs to be scaled back to 100k a year at most. Sadly its too late to fix this country

We can not afford to be angry with land lords either!

Cool, get rid of the tax benefits for propperty speculators and rent seekers. Are we going to address the elephant in the room, immigration? Last year 640K net migrants entered Australia, this year its projected to hit at least 500k; that is another Adelaide. Have we got another Adelaide ready now? How about constructing one every 2 years?

Not addressing the mass importation of renters and labour is muddling around the edges. These are migration levels that the UK, a country 3x our population is having trouble absorbing. Its nio just statistics, we can see and feel the change tangibly is daily life.

Whitlam would be rolling in his grave if he knew what Labor had become.

50-100 000 immigrants are coming into Australia every month currently.

They all need somewhere to live. They rent or they buy. Rarely do they end up living on the streets or in a tent.

High immigration is the most significant contribution to high house prices and rents.

It's not all the pieces in the puzzle, but it's the most significant piece.

Provision of housing is not a Federal Government issue Max. It is a state issue and a state's rights issue. With the exception of some limited federal/defence facilities in states, those states decide all the rules for developers and builders/tradies, which land to release or rezone when, what can be built where, what contributions are required from developers, how much stamp duty and land tax to apply, at what levels. Even things like homebuilder's insurance requirements. The Feds can only decide how many immigrants it floods into those states and even then cannot control which states those immigrants choose to inhabit, nor for how long. So Max, please focus on what is within the Federal powers.
