Zyprexa

Zyprexa or olanzapine, a second generation or atypical antipsychotic drug, treats schizophrenia, mania of bipolar disorder and when combined with fluoxetine assists in treatment resistant depression.

Zyprexa belongs to the same family as Abilify, Risperdal, Seroquel, Invega, Latuda, Vraylar, Saphris, Geodon and Rexulti. The American Psychiatric Association does not recommend any one drug over another. The APA suggests these medicines should be prescribed at the lowest possible dose since all of the drugs are associated with significant and sometimes persistent side effects.

Zyprexa has been used for an ever expanding list of off label indications not authorized by the FDA or confirmed by adequate studies. Among the long list of conditions where Zyprexa is used are PTSD, Tourette Syndrome, stuttering, hyperactivity, autism and even insomnia.

For schizophrenia, Zyprexa’s results should be obvious within the first week. Lack of response by 4-6 weeks suggests failure to comply with therapy, an incorrect diagnosis or the need to switch to a pill with a different binding profile in the brain.

True info** on the drugs side affects, strengths, weaknesses, contraindications, etc. I really do appreciate your research behind the manufacturing and studies with each drug regarding FDA approval and independent studies. I just finished titration to get off Olanzapine (did it on my own between appointments with my psychiatrist), I was taking 20mg per day for almost 3 years. I feel incredible, like a lead blanket has been lifted off my mind. I decided to stop because of the side effects, it really hit me during a very emotional time in my life when I realized that I was totally numb and had no feelings over the event. It was sickening and scared me more than the weight gain. Listening to you describe all these other side effects that my doctor *never explained* really confirms that I made the right decision.

I find the 12lb weight gain hard to believe..that should be "per month". It should be issued with survival kits, you could be adrift on a raft for 40 days and weight reported up at rescue.

I was diagnosed with borderline and I was prescribed this terrible terrible drug, this made me gain 34 kg pretty fast, plus they prescribed an extreme high dose og truxal to, I became a zombie, it eventually ruin my relationship, just find out I was misdiagnosed. It was ADHD. the diagnosed 5 years ago, at a of 38, my life has been a turmoil, self medicating at an of 15, found amfetamin to make me feel normal, at low doses, but I ended taking huge dodis for 14 years. The past is the past. I'm on methylphenidate (ritalin uno) we calibrated the dose, my life is a bliss now. Cheers from Denmark. Please stay healthy out here, just a bit makes a huge difference, hvis you strygle mentally, just 5 min every other day. Pushup my favourite. Today I'm boxing.

Thank you Dr Ken. I’ve been on Zyprexa 2.5 mg for 5 years. I have developed diabetes and weight gain and several other symptoms. I am 71 and my endocrinologist would like me to stop taking the medication. Is it alright to just stop?

A horrible drug..side effects for me were terrible from the beginning. The restlessness, and tremors were constant, and the severe tardive dyskinesia has never gone away, even after stopping the drug "years ago" . When I stopped the drug, the withdraw was "hellish" and nearly caused me to kill myself ..even tho I tapered slowley off the drug when I stopped. It should be recalled and never b prescribed for bipolar type disorders in the first place..it was over prescribed by psychiatrists for years..it should be used only in the very rarest form if at all.. But this video was very helpful and informative, Thank you

I don't understand why any doctor would prescribe this drug for anxiety. The side effects are too many and some are quite serious. Antidepressants are an option
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is another option.

Within a couple weeks my psychosis went away, but the withdrawal gave me after suddenly stopping without weening off of it was insomnia, the worst night I didn't sleep at all. Once I started taking it again I could only get bouts of sleep 2-3 at a time. Hopefully going to ween off of it and suffer no symptoms.. but it's not very predictable.

My 11 year old was prescribed this to gain weight and reduced anxiety when eating. Would that work or would it cause further serious health issues?
