Brené Brown explained the difference between taking pleasure in someone else's pain and taking pleasure in someone else's joy, and how it's important to surround yourself with people who do the latter. "In the absence of connection there is always suffering" -- profound and universally true.

As a 4th grade teacher, I find the language in Atlas of the Heart transformational to my work with students. We NEED to lean into this learning to cultivate an education system (and world) where all kids can thrive!

Brenè’s books, podcasts, and TED Talks have changed my life. Guided me into therapy and inspired me to start my self work. So grateful.

It was wonderful watching Ellen struggle through her own discomfort with being vulnerable and open about her emotions, just being in Brene's presence. She didn't try and hide behind her humour really at all. That was inspiring and relatable for me.

I love how Dr Brown replied with, "action" when Ellen asked about ideas for managing "feeling everything." I myself identify as an empath and for years I have spiritually bypassed taking action. Things really improved for me when I started studying anxiety and, later on, mindfulness and especially the neuroscience of mindfulness. Taking those actions, with additional support from a mental wellbeing expert, was a real gamechanger. What shifted mainly was my tendency to somehow "blame" others and situations for how I was feeling. I understood what was happening and learned how to self-regulate. Yes, even when it's "energy" you feel, it's your brain and the rest of your nervous system that interpret it, and you usually don't know it's happening so you're always "on edge." I can't recommend taking action strongly enough. And yes, I still identify as an intuitive and an empath, but the anxiety and panic attacks have practically vanished.

The 'freude freude' concept Brene talks about is actually one of the four Buddist Brahmaviras. It is called 'moodhita', finding joy in others happiness. It is a Sanskrit and Pali word that has no English equivalent. Moodhita is followed by most practising Buddhists.

I too have been dealing with feeling guilty for joy because of all the people suffering right now in the world. Thank you for the advice. Allowing myself joy is what this world needs more of 🌎 ☮️

Thank you for saying this, “We need to lean into Joy and Love during the difficult times we are living in.” I agree, but sometimes it feels hard to do. I deeply appreciate your affirmation.

I really love this interview. Ellen being vulnerable, Brene continuing to shine her light on shame and vulnerability 🤍 I no longer have the tolerance for inauthentic BS and being saturated with reality tv (which appears to be far from reality) if it’s meaningful, it’s engaging to me. 🙏
