Say ‘thank you’ if pedestrians/dog walkers make room for you to pass and if necessary sacrifice your PB to make them feel more safe by slowing down before passing on shared paths. I noticed that especially people walking their dogs off leash or on long leash appreciate when you give them time to call their dog to heel, sit or secure them.

As a horse rider (who also cycles) I can tell you that there's 2 ways to spook a horse when you're on a bike - 1) you "sneak up" behind them and appear in the horses' peripheral vision unexpectedly (you're probably pushing hard for a KOM or a PB) or 2) you stop pedalling and that awesome freehub sound you've paid so much for on your nice wheels startles the horse.
Either way, calling out to the rider, letting them know you are coming, and stopping if the horse appears agitated or the rider waves at you to stop is the best way to proceed. Some horses need to stop to let you past, others want you to stop so they can pass you. We can all do more to look after each other, and I know there are plenty of horse riders out there too who can be more considerate - let's set a good example :)

I read that the Swedes do something called "plogging, ' which is just picking up one piece of litter when you are out on a walk. So on a ride if I find an empty beer can by the road I bring it home as our beer store takes them for charity donation. One can each ride--it adds up!

Other than pros, who throws a water bottle? Mine is quite precious. Will never throw it off my bike.

Don't forget being courteous to motorists, that's a big one amongst us and one of the reasons i almost always ride solo.

I feel it is completely appropriate to swear at lights that change the second you stop and put your foot down.

When approaching the horse coming the other way towards you, it might also be an idea to turn your flashing front day light off to not confuse it. 👍🙂

First time I had a mechanical it was my chain - the quick link came undone - and it was on a super busy bike path. Dozens of cyclists passed and the only person to stop was a guy with a hub who told me that if I had a cool bike like his, my chain wouldn’t have broken. I cannot stress enough how much you should not be THAT guy with a super shine bike who takes the opportunity to brag about it to someone trying desperately to fix their bike.

Glad you included about waving or acknowledging fellow cyclists. In my experience the cyclists least likely to do so are the speedy/lycra clad/ club peloton types who just ignore my friendly wave as they power on past. Very rude. Hope they are watching this excellent video.

I wave to every single cyclist I see, be they on a road bike, a mountain bike or just out for a family ride. I find that less than half of them wave back. I'll keep waving though! 😊

It's worth adding that when going passed horses don't freewheel if you've got a 36 tooth ratchet on your rear wheel. Yes it sounds great but it's noisy as hell! I also reach back and cover my rear light (which is flashing) as that can spook the horse.

Ever since I was small I've nodded/waved at other cyclist. I was a part of the revolution: not taking a car! Getting shouted at whilst following the rules of the road, keeping the air clean, being more hardcore than those on 4 wheels....
Don't be that old bugger who blanks a wave, were all on the same team!
Viva la revolution comrades!

I'd add that it's ok to say 'thank you' or 'morning' as you pass a pedestrian (and if you have one, avoid a ringing your bell) - costs nothing, leaves a good impression.

Thank you so much for talking about horse riders, because, as a horse rider and a cyclist I know how easily horses can spook at the craziest things too (my horse sometimes spooks by me just walking near him if he doesn’t notice me) so thanks I feel like no one ever talks about this. ☺️😊😁

when i see that the road up ahead is clear, i wave at cars behind me to let them know it is a good time to past.
I often get a thumbs up out the window or a friendly honk, and they always leave me plenty of room!

I do a little peace sign instead of waving because sometimes I don’t even want to take my hands off the bars to wave

Hank: "I've got a front blowout on the front and back blowout on the back!"... I've had the opposite happen. Much worse.
