It was a grate engine, people just didnt keep up mantainence on it and forgot the water/methanol fluid and it ran out, without it the car had pre-ignition and killed the engine. That all alloy V8 has a wonderful history, its the only General Motors pushrod based V8 to ever win Forumla 1 and not only a race, the whole championship! Australian Sir Jack Brabam with help from Repco engineering Australia imported 20 Oldsmobile Versions of the V8 to Australia in the 1960s, removed the heads and designed Over Head Cam heads, dry sump oiling and installed the motor in Brabam F1 car that was also driven by Jack Brabam, he won the whole Forumla 1 championship season in a car he built/drove and designed the modifications to ! The motor also was sold to Rover in england and lived on for decades powering Range Rover's among others, Layland Australia took the engine out to 270 ci with a tall deck block and installed it in Australian P76 cars. The same turbo motor was the basis for the longest running V6 GM ever made, the Buick V6, is just the Alloy motor with 2 cylinders cut off, the Buick 3800 rite up to 2006 still retained the alloy motors bore spacing, 90 deg bank angle ( as it started at 90 deg for a V8 ) . So a long lived great engine that won the F1 championship . Not bad .

It was an aluminum block 215 cubic inch motor& with some slight mods. Could push over 300hp easily..👍✌️

Volkswagen had early turbos. The problem was stopping once you got going.

The Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder, introduced in 1962, was the first U.S. production car to feature a turbocharged engine. It was quickly followed by the Oldsmobile Jetfire, also in 1962.

Be a good car to find an 3.8 turbo swap

Let me guess. That “rocket fuel” for the turbo could only be bought from the Oldsmobile manufacturer/car seller at a stupid price at the time. And if you ran out, couldn’t afford more, your turbo blew up.

Throw in a grand national regal turbo. Problem solved 😊

And GM hasn’t figured out turbos to this day.
