Worked on ejector seats at Boscombe Down in 89/90 it was GREAT work and I was HAPPY to work on something that would save lives if used.

There's a watch company called Bremont that gifts a watch to any service member who is able to survive an ejection seat. The seats can cause 12-30Gs of force, which can and does in some cases lead to death.

The watches they give out come with a special red ring around the watch case, which it's other versions do not have and cannot be special ordered.

I saw a video a Vietnam vet shot down a enemy jet... And he watched the pilot eject.... The pilot got seat separation from the airplane but didn't get separation from the seat.... And this American pilot just watched this guy he had shot down just fall into the jungle.... As a fighter you hate to see it happen to another fighter in a sense.
Like we fought you lost but you deserve to survive in that particular circumstance. We know getting killed is a risk of the job but when the fight is over and now you're just trying to save your own life in an individual sense you kinda root for the other guy and it hurts when you see that the things that they were supposed to be able to depend on to save them doesn't.

If you think this is scary you should look into how people eject from deep sea submarines. It's pretty crazy

Sometimes the seat passes through the canopy. In the A-6 the seat has a guide rail that acts as a ram bursting the canopy as it passes through. Then the seat fires and passes through the broken canopy.

Almost Simon, but pulling the handle does not send and electric impulse. It sends a ballistic one. Using explosives cartridges ballistic gases set off the various bells and whistles to include in naces series ejections seats "thermal batteries" which turn on and actuate the ejection sequencer (a computer that does as you stated. On older ie sju5/6 seats there is no computer. But rather a rhube goldbergesque machine using explosives, lines, tip rods ectect to set things off in sequence. Canopys are on some aircraft jettisoned from the aircraft in others it is fractured using explosives. But either way the seat is designed to go through the canopy in the even the canopy doesn't do as it should.

Even flying 5meters upside down above ground, ejections seats work. When triggered they are able to eject in such a way the pilot will be 10-15meters upright above ground before the parachute is deployed.
It's a whole lot of science and innovation that went into that technology and this short video can't do justice to the history and amazing inventors behind this

You forgot to mention the G force caused by these ejector seats are usually greater than whatever the pilots were doing.

Nowadays according to some Air Force men if you use the ejector seat especially if it's not a lane for death situation you're gonna get laughed at
