In this video, I replace the battery in my BMW F30 340i. It was surprisingly difficult to find the correct battery for my car. The original part number had been discontinued, there was little to nothing in stores or online with matching specs, and information on the forums was contradictory or incorrect.

Luckily my local dealership had the battery in stock and it wasn't much more expensive than the batteries at the auto part stores. I wish I had just gone to the dealership first and saved myself the time and frustration. Keep in mind there is still a HUGE savings if you install and code it yourself rather than having the dealership install it. You will pay almost double if they install it for you.

If you're physically able to replace your battery at home (I'm not kidding, this sucker is HEAVY), you'll need to register the battery to let the car know that it has been replaced. I used Carly, but BimmerLink will work too. If you use BimmerLink and need to change the amp hours, you will need BimmerCode as well. With Carly you can do both in one app.

ONE LAST THING: there is a small white plastic plug on the opposite side from the vent tube. You’ll need to transfer that from your old battery to you new one

When you are tightening up the terminal clamps..especially the negative, it is a good idea to put downward pressure on the engine side of the terminal to counter your tightening torque and minimize strain on the post. You can see in the video at 5:40 the stress on the post.

Just wanted to say this video helped me so much. I went to my dealer and got a new OEM battery for 250$ and registered it myself. Thank you!

My original bmw battery lasted 8 years. Amazing. Started getting fault codes on various things because of low amps. Dealership wanted to run diagnostics for 2 days to figure out what's going on. I put my foot down and said change the battery first. Clear all codes and then we will see. I was right.

Great video and explanation of WHY you need to register your battery- many people have roasted their batteries because they didn't know they were supposed to do that. Also, that specific CTEK Battery Charger is a very good one, I have it too. It even comes as an OEM stock part with many higher-end cars, it's a very good investment.

THANK YOU Justin! Your style of presentation is so clean and concise and your calm friendly manner help remove any intimidation doing a DIY sometimes presents. The 7 year old original battery in my 228i sounded tired. I was going to have a garage pick out and install a new battery for me, but what a hassle just having anyone squeeze me into their schedules. I've always done whatever work I can myself anyway. On your advise I did pick up a BMW battery at a dealer. Also sent for a Carly which I had considered doing for a year anyway for the coding options. I'm heading outside right now so hopefully armed with your insights it will go seamlessly. Appreciate your great instructions!

I had issues with autozone and oreilly when looking for mine, too. Even the dealer was out so I ended up finding the exact spec replacement by interstate at Costco! Been running strong since

Most satisfying battery install I've ever watched 😀 glad you got it sorted!

good tuitorial, only thing I'd say is disconnect the negative first then start pulling out stuff and covering the positive. Only way you'd get the old welding arc is going across the terminals... not speaking from experience or anything

Got my replacement battery from Walmart for $175. It was a 95 Ah and cheaper than anywhere else by $50-60 bucks. Stealership was around $300 not installed.

Good info, I'd say though if you are careful you can get really good deals on batteries. A little over a year ago the AGM battery in my 2013 Audi allroad was starting to die over a couple of days (It was dated 08/2012. AGM batteries are really impressive). A matching H8 battery from VW/Audi was > $250. I was on the Audizine forums and found out an H8 Champion battery at my PepBoys was $189 (including core charge). Installed it last January, changed the serial number by 1 letter with VCDS, and returned old battery and payed 171 for a brand new AGM battery. I've had no problems.

I'd say do your research and find a good matching spec battery with a discount and you'll win big time. I haven't had any problems with my battery besides the few times I've left my OBDeleven plugged in overnight.

Justin, you do such a great job being detailed enough and without any unwanted extras or extra time in the video. Editing is on point! Clear, concise and straightforward! Keep up the great work! Love your channel!

94RAGM will also fit these cars. Should be a little smaller but there’s *usually* an adjustment for the bracket that holds the battery in place. All you have to do is register the battery as a lower Amp Hour rating. Won’t affect anything as long as it’s registered to the vehicle. Great video yet again man! I’ll never know why they make these batteries so damn heavy! 🤣

Better idea than overpaying at the stealership: Get an Odyssey AGM battery from FCP Euro. Less expensive, better quality, and FCP extends the warranty to LIFETIME as they do on all parts they sell. Huge win.

I have never understood the fascination with amp hours. I could be completely wrong but your car either starts or does not. Once it starts the alternator should provide all the power needed to run whatever in the car or they are some crazy voltage paths being taken to charge and discharge a battery at the same time. Amp hours simply refer to how long a battery will supply a certain amperage for how long without a charge. I start my track car with a battery that weighs less than 4 pounds. Of course on a cooler day I need to use a jump box since the oil is thicker but once the car is running and up to temp zero issues for the rest of the day. I saw another video claiming that different things in the car were affected by the battery and its efficiencies. Would love to get an explanation of what and how as once the car is running...again the alternator is doing the work.

Nice video Justin! Glad you were able to get it sorted out. It took me a while to figure out my battery was the issue but once I replaced it the starts and everything back strong. Good job!!!
