What if Texas Was Divided?

Talk about timing. After the Civil War there were a series of plans to divide up the largest Southern state. To turn it into three or four smaller states. None of these plans ever had a realistic chance of happening, except for one.

This is a scenario where Texas was divided after the Civil War.

Also to clarify something. The Trinity River divides into three tributes. The border for the new East Texas state was everything East of that river. The only question was, which tributary? If the border was along that eastern most tribute, then East Texas wouldn't have Dallas. However if it was through the middle tribute, then it would.

So there is a possibility Dallas and Fort Worth could have been in two separate states. But that depends where on the river the border would be. Just because I know somebody is gonna say it.

Fun fact: the northeast corner of texas has changed hands more times than any other spot in america (in a span of little over a hundred years it went as follows: france, spain, france, america, spain, mexico, texan republic, america, confederacy and finally america again)

We were taught about these plans in Texas history growing up. One of the more prominent proposals was actually splitting it into 4 states on ecological zones, since the state technically supports 4 distinct climates.

As a european I find this fascinating. If there's divisions within a country here, it's often because of historical or linguistic reasons. Hearing how something like geography can be such a decisive factor really gives me a new perspective on the U.S

First off, I love the callback to our winter weather lol. Secondly, I think East Texas would basically be like Arkansas. You say it has nothing, but what it would have is probably lots of hunting, camping, maybe some resorts. It would be where a lot of Texans went for outdoor adventures. And it would probably market to Texans more than any other state.

I'd also want to point out, that if Texas did split into 3 parts, the Republicans would have a net gain of two Republican senators, since Trinity would be a Red State, adding to the two Republican senators from Texas itself.
