I was in China last week, like many in the west I was sceptical about the social credits and at first feeling uncomfortable with cameras staring at you every 100 m.

But after 10 days I think they really need it.

Many Chinese will just w the law and rules whenever they can. Be it traffic, stopping for pedestrians (back in 2013 no one stops for people crossing the roads- remember those massive traffic deaths due to speeding?

Now they take photos every time a car turns the corner into a road. Yet the scooters are still ramping off without stopping. Guess they know its still not able to catch them!

The spitting has reduced but so many still doing it. Smoking in restricted areas continues. To the extend that airport toilets have sensors!

Chinese are generally smart intelligent but the errand ones are very disobedient, those who are not up to a civic consciousness will do anything for short cuts or personal gratification- very selfish. Cut queues, default on loans,

So social credit is a good thing. If you are an expat, you want to be safe and comfortable and the surveillance is to ensure your safety!

Met a taxi driver who is well aware of western views of privacy. He says privacy is for those at home not in the public space! The cameras ensures safety and security for everyone

How many Chinese frame their effort to build an advanced economy as some form of competition with the United States? Everything I have seen from the Chinese suggests their interest is in building a better China. Their worry about the United States is primarily driven by the history of the Western European effort to dominate the world and subjugate China. How many Chinese are terrified by the surveillance equipment? What rationality is there in the idea that some one nation is going to dominate technology? How is the 1950s effort to build more destructive weapons and showcase technical achievement through a small exploration of space similar to the world's largest nations dramatically improving the lifestyle and access to technology of most of its population?

What Richard Engle finds disturbing about China probably isn't disturbing to the Chinese.

I've just finished watching Richard Engals full documentary on Chinese Tech AI!! America I'm afraid is like a third world country in comparison! Cheap smart phones for everyone.. high speed internet for everyone ... facial recognition on everyone ..they know where you've been, and where you are!! Very low crime rates!! . Docks with container ships being loaded and unloaded without a human being in sight! . It's fantastic but also scary!! . It's coming!!

The US invented a Social Credit Score, it's called FICO Score.

In a small village of 50 people where the 1 police for the entire village knew everybody by name, what they do, where they lived, and so on, its described as having strong friendly relationship in tight knit community.
According to western value and its media as displayed here; where in a huge country of 1.4b people of another culture, with the same being enabled by technology, its described as dystopian.

I dont think the social credit is worked as said. You would not have less borrowing power for whining about the state. It mainly serves financial and monetary purposes. Criminal investigation is just another story.

this is a 'beggar-thy-neighbor' attitude of 'you win, we lose' which is totally unnecessary as both countries can prosper and develop technology without conflict.
also, the 'social credit system' in China is considered something of a joke as Chinese are masters at avoiding surveillance and control having done it for several centuries.
