The First Descendant Review

The First Descendant is an impressive addition to the online mmo-lite looter shooter genre. With stunning visuals, engaging gunplay, and plenty of endgame activites, The First Descendent strives to set itself apart, and may have the moxy and substance to keep players engaged for the long haul. However, while the First Descendant's gameplay loop and incentivization structure are generally polished and fun the game is clearly designed around making the experience for players who are willing to throw down some cash that much more convenient and enjoyable than if they were to attempt to play the game without cutting any corners. A wealth of endgame activities and possibilities should keep players engaged and the First Descendant can still be enjoyed for all its best elements, despite its shortcomings. Emerging onto the live shooter scene somewhat tainted by its deep-seated monetization incentives, The First Descendant is nevertheless one of the best games in the online looter shooter genre.

Disclaimer: I do not play Warframe. I don't care what Warframe does. I reviewed this game independently and not as a comparison to Warframe or with any consideration for how Warframe's progression and monetization is set up. I probably would not like Warframe's monetization systems either.

This argument about ability to buy everything instead of grinding don't make any sense. How exactly that make your experience worse? No one force you to buy anything, and if you choose to buy something you still got plenty opportunity to grind other characters and weapons.

You got yourself a new subscriber.

I see your comments of full of people who actually defend the pay-to-win monetization, so they clearly aren't the audience your channel is geared toward.

I am your target audience and there are many of us. The false dichotomy of pay to win vs a tedious grind is a straw man.

Progression should be based on skill. Easy to pick up, hard to master type gameplay.

Keep your focus and your identity, you're doing great.

Warframe does the time sync of getting resources to build new frames and works alright over there. Would you say this is worse/same/better? I have spent many hours and many dollars on WF just because I like the game, wondering if this will take my time now

I like this video but just like everybody else, i do feel a certain way about the way you view monetization. This game is direct competitor to Warframe and Destiny, mainly warframe, which if this is what we compare it to gameplay wise, we should also do it price wise. Warframe has been out for 10+ years, and far as i know, show no huge signs of a downfall anytime soon. The price of prime warframe purchasing is $100, in which they also gatekeep certain customizations through that pack, the prime accessories. The ultimate descendants cost 5000 caliber(1400 on release for a discount) which pretty sure is equivalent to $100.Price wise that is similar to warframe, although i would argue warframe you get more value as they give you lots in that $100 bundle. I’m
just genuinely lost as to where the problem with a game wanting to fund itself and make money is. You said it yourself everything besides cosmetics can be farmed, and even colors can be farmed now because the developers heard the complaint, so what’s wrong with a company wanting players to have a way to give them money and get something out of it? Games on average are worth 70 usd nowadays, so if you release a f2p game, you are already at a $70 per person deficit. When it comes to looter shooters, like destiny and warframe, some enjoy the grind, some enjoy the late game content, some just enjoy customization options, etc. We all value different aspects of these games, but we also have jobs and things in life that limit our game time, so being able to purchase them as an option allows maybe someone who works all day but only loves dungeons aspects of games to skip the monotonous character grind part, and focus on the dungeon farming. Most of your complaints like something forcing you to buy a more expensive pack to get what you want( an extra 10$ pack) is in almost every single game nowadays, which doesn’t make it right, but doesn’t mean it should lose scoring points for that. Countless people asked for a founders pack and they decided not to, they are also making the first batch of primes dirt cheap to buy, even though lots would pay full price for the feeling to have it first, so the developers are trying, and deserve the acknowledgment

It's a fun and grindy game for people that like to grind, and a money funnel for people that don't. Simple.

Awesome breakdown, it' is disappointing though how the ultimate forms are monetized. But I'll definitely be diving in to buss down the campaign with a couple homies.

I think there should be a standard for how much you can expect to spend to have a good time with limited grind in a free to play game. People can't expect to not grind a free to play. We have to find the line though. I've personally decided $20-$30 is about the sweet spot. Especially if you can't unlock an ultimate descendant without spending money. $60 for a character is asinine.

Warframe is doing the same thing, if you use plat, your life will be easier. I dont see people bitching about it.

Its a free to play game, they have to make money somehow. The only problem would be if it's unplayerable or rather very hard to play if you don't spend money. As long as it's not like that, then it's fine.

Ill give the game a shot…. From what ive see so far it looks stunning….. we should expect monetization in F2P games by now and its entirely up to the individual if they want to spend money instead of putting time into the game. Hopefully this game can go longer than a few months before getting stale
