When planning my trip to Greece, there were a few places that were recommended by many. Santorini, Mykonos and of course Athens were almost default answers, and obviously so due to the beauty each share. But there was one other place that intrigued me just as much. A place that offers the beauty of so many greek islands, but minus the meme like number of tourists. An island that is just a 30 minute ferry ride from nearby Sarande, Albania but also having its’ own international airport, if you haven’t guessed it by now - today’s video will talk about the lovely island of Corfu and why I’d recommend you visit sometime in the future too.

An island with roots all the way back to the 8th Century may involve a slightly longer video to fully walk through, but fortunately, the past influences of the French, British and Venetian rule could all still be seen today through the gorgeous architecture that’s not hard to miss. The name “Corfu” itself, meaning either “peaks” or “city of peaks” depending on Byzantine translation feels fitting especially when looking at the surrounding mountains and hills you’ll find yourself commonly walking amongst. It’s an island that also has a noticeable amount of greenery mixed with its shorelines that is not always common with other more popular greek islands.

Accommodation

But speaking of more popular greek islands, unlike the likes of Santorini or Mykonos, accommodation here, especially during non-peak months - can easily be found for $25 Dollars and up per night. Those who opt to stay closer to Old Town will have trouble finding deals this low but if you have interest in simply being close to the ocean, your options will open up tremendously.

Transportation

Regarding getting around, although sections of Corfu are walkable, you may still need some wheels to get you places a little quicker. There are green and blue busses that take you through the island and many of the stops have QR codes that allow you to know how far the next bus may be. Taxis can also be an option but it can be much more expensive so keep this in mind especially if trying to get around the island at later parts of the day.

Safety

In terms of safety, I never felt uneasy about my surroundings at any point. Corfu feels in the best way, like a contained city. Like most places, especially where tourists generally are such as Old Town or popular beaches, it’s still best to keep an eye on your belongings just to be on the safe side of things.

Costs

When it comes to the cost of goods, I found prices to at times be on the slightly higher side compared to places such as Athens, but never feel like a rip off. Food could range from a few dollars at a quick gyro stand or bakery. to upwards of 20 dollars and up for a fresh meat dish. Cash will be your best friend but cards were accepted at some restaurants as well.

Activities

In terms of things to do, I’d like to approach this a little differently. Is Old Town worth visiting, yes. Is the fancy restaurant overlooking the beach probably a good choice. This is also true, but from my experience, I got the most out of simply walking around and appreciating the blend of beautiful architecture and nature all around. If you’re a fan of cats, you’ll also love just how often you’ll come across these cute creatures. If you’re allergic though, you should be able to avoid them pretty okay too. This feels like a city that’s best used as a place to reset and relax as opposed to have your day jam packed with things to do, and that’s totally okay. But, to be fair, being that my visit came during offseason, it felt a lot more calm and relaxed, which was perfect.

Conclusion

As I look back at my time on Corfu, it was the perfect place to reflect on how beautiful Greece was as a whole. From the people I met, to the culture I was introduced to, I couldn’t have imagined having a better experience. Corfu is an island that is certainly popular, but how I like to travel, it was relaxed, calming and a perfect getaway that I’m sure you’ll experience during your visit as well. I loved my time in Corfu, and I hope this video showed why.
