You don't need to create a Windows USB or backup drivers, The Ally has cloud restore built into the BIOS. All you have to do after installing the SSD is run it in the BIOS and it'll download Windows 11 as well as all the required Asus software for the Ally.

Had no idea about DoubleDriver. This is gonna make any future fresh install soooo much easier.

Hello. Just wanted to say thank you very much for this tutorial. While I did try to restore through Asus cloud recovery first it would never work. I had all the updates installed, firmware, bios, set time correctly. It would never finish the recovery. Once I followed your instructions I had a fully functioning Ally with an upgraded ssd! Keep up the great work.

You can also simply create a image, copy over a flashdrive or ext drive, and restore. It might be easier and faster

It's incredible how easy it is to get access to the ssd and upgrade it. Pity the prices for 2230 ssd's are still steep relative to 2280, but in the future the gap can narrow. Allegedly one doesn't even need to make a backup of windows 11 and the drivers since the Asus Bios has cloud restore that can grab everything automatically which is awesome.

from my experience, the decks release saw the high end 2230's go down in price. Last year i got a 2TB western digital 2230 for my deck for $230. I've ordered one recently for the ROG and it was $160.

To prevent damage to the components, I would recommend disconnecting the battery first before replacing the SSD. According to some teardown videos, it can be known that the protection plate of the battery is in the middle. The battery is connected to the motherboard via a cable (black wire, white connector).

Definitely going to be the first thing I do when I get mine. Thanks for the driver doubler info, that’s going to make my life easier regardless what pc I need it for.

Buys a 2 TB SSD on the Ally. Played a few games on it. 6 months to a year later a new handheld comes out, buy another 2 Tb SSD card to put in the new improved device and play a few games on it.

A larger SSD than a 512 is only needed if Ally is your only gaming PC. I don't see the need to keep my entire steam library of PC games when majority of the time I mainly focusing on play a few games while all the other games are just taking up space.
