Wow, one only reads about that lake in obscure geography texts. Youre essentially on the ancient silk road.

I'm glad there are people out there who are willing to go out to these remote places and document their travels cause I sure as hell would never want to go to these places.

The car was purposely not there/delayed. This was done to ensure that you paid more money for lodging and food. This is a very old and common tourist trap 😊

Really an adventure worth traveling on. The locals and the cops were warm and full of hospitality. Glad you got thru

Most Asians will never ever get to see all that
Thank you for acknowledging that part of the world

I drove the Pamir highway in 2017. (though we came from Tajikistan)
I even remember the Capricorn statue.
Thanks for bringing back those memories. The world was a brighter place back then.

It's so awesome that you managed to cross this way! I had to cross from Tajikistan back into Uzbekistan, and then to kyrgyzstan. I would have loved to cross the Pamir. It sounds like youre a couple though? If i had someone else with me, i maybe would have tried it this way.

I see these comments are either "wow such an adventure", or "stupid American tourists". Thought I'd shate my 2 cents as someone who lived in central Asia. I wouldn't argue that this is the world's strangest or most dangerous border crossing, but it certainly isn't easy. The border between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan (Kordai) is super chill and modern, whilst the borders with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are less developed because of territorial disputes. Sending an email of your name is as much a security thing as it is a scary thing, probably so you don't get lost. I recon its the long stretch of no-man's land which could be problematic... I wouldn't like a truck to break down in the middle of that territory that's for sure!

In a way this group are really brave for doing this crossing - a lot of people in general don't know what it's like to be on a non-paved road for hours on end, in a place where there's no drinking water and the sun is scorching hot and there are strong winds blowing at the same time. Forget service stations. There is also likely to be some dangerous wildlife too... I would say that the group shows an unrealistically positive account of this process... I don't think it's a bad thing as the narrator sort of mentions a lot of what was hard about it, but I think some sort of quick reflection about how it's a shame that this is reality for many people in the region works have been fitting.

One note about poverty tourism... Central Asia has a huge corruption problem and money gets held at the top of society/in the capital cities. So encountering poverty is sort of unavoidable. Whilst small donations to people here and there go a long way, you won't be fixing the issue, and in some ways you'll be making it worse, as they start to think that all tourists or white people passing by will be their main source of income (for context, state pensions are around $30-50 a month in Kyrgyzstan).

I hope what I said provides some nuance :)
