How Far Away Is The Moon?

You might feel like you've got a good grasp on how far away the Moon is, but you probably don't. It looks a lot closer than it actually is. In fact, most things in outer space look closer than they actually are. You might even be overwhelmed by the true vastness and emptiness of space.

*I'm aware of the typo at **5:16**. It should be kilometers, not meters. Please stop commenting about it.* There used to be an old-style annotation on top of it as a correction, but YouTube got rid of all those annotations without giving us any alternative. I have no way to fix it anymore 😞

"The universe is vast, cold and empty, and we are so small and insignificant. The only hope humans have of being important... is to each other". #deep!

On this scale. The closest star to the sun would be like three times farther away than the real life moon is to earth. Like three quarters of a million km away.

Even if the moon is so small and far away from the earth, it can gravitationally influence the oceans. Our universe is amazing!
Thank you for your hard work, your video are perfect from every point of view.

The only hope humans have of being important is to each other. That is quite profound.

I'm a new subscriber and I love the way that you describe things quickly and comically, something I know younger me would've absolutely loved and older me really appriciates. Thanks for going so far to make science more tangible and real to people who might not always be so excited to find these things out.

i heard in an interview with bill clinton that when nasa showed him one of the rocks brought from the moon, he asked "can i keep that for a while?". they let him keep it for the duration of his term and everytime there was a metting taking place that he knew things were going to get heated, he took the moon rock with him. when things got out of hand he just pointed at the rock and said "see that rock? it's been around for over 4 billion years up there on the moon. and WE went there and brought it here". he said this worked every time and everyone took a step back and instead of shouting at each other started talking and getting things done. once you get faced with the actual scale of the universe and its age, it puts you in prespective on how trivial our problems and disagreements actually are in the grand scheme and instead of angrily shout at each other maybe we should find common ground and go from there. because the universe won't solve our problems for us, and the universe won't care.

this video made me realise I am like one dust particle in the universe, probably less than that.. So be humble while you are living..

The last line about being important to each other is a cosmic zinger.

The end, hahahahaha. I always appreciate the way astronomy puts everything in perspective.

Best part is between 0:38 and 0:42: "That perspective makes the Earth look flat even though it isn't... there's photographic and video evidence". He’s obviously ridiculing the Flat earthers 😂😂😂😂😂😭.

Best science channel on YouTube. It seems light hearted but there is some proper concepts and ideas being explained and explored here.

This video makes me want to be a better person--the universe isn't empty and unfeeling; we've got Science Asylum videos to keep us motivated ;)
