England’s head coach responded to furious fans throwing empty beer cups at him and booing the team off the field after his side's 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday night.

Southgate said he understood the angry response. ‘I'm not going to back away from it,’ he said. ‘The most important thing here is that the supporters stay with the team.’

In my younger years, I would have killed for a boss as loyal as Gareth Southgate. However, I think it can be detrimental to performance in the long term especially if a boss is too soft. The fans aren’t complaining about the players. They are complaining about the strategy of Gareth Southgate & wonder why it’s not working out given the calibre of the players. He doesn’t say what he’s going to do about the situation going forward.
