Zellige tiles are one of Morocco's most valued and recognizable art forms. But this type of tile isn't cheap, especially compared to other popular machine-made tiles. A square foot of Zellige tiles can cost $50. Compare that to ceramic subway tiles, which might only cost $0.15 per square foot. The craft of making Zellige tiles is centuries old, but it may be dying as young artisans lose interest in the trade. So why are Zellige tiles so expensive? And how is Morocco preserving this valuable art?

Zellige is everywhere in Morocco, we have the Almohad Mosque of the Kasba built by Moroccans AD 1235 that has somethings similar to this, is very beautiful as a culture, big up to our Moroccan brothers, all the love from Tunisia!

Working with clay really has given me a place where I can engage in some healthy introspection, sort of all you can really do when you're in the studio alone coning clay and making bowls or plates or whatever. I really hope more young people are able to find their way into it because its a beautiful medium and the world would be poorer with out Zellige.

The funny thing is that some newly created countries arround decided to have some sort of heritage and started nicking the Morrocan one which has been built up over centuries and centuries to bring up to where it is now! The clay from which these tiles are made is only found in the areas surrounding the city of Fez. Therefore, this industry only exists in this city, from which the name of the Fasian court was taken.
