Conventional wisdom about diets, including government health recommendations, seems to change all the time. And yet ads routinely come out claiming to have THE answer about what we should eat. So how do we distinguish what’s actually healthy from what advertisers just want us to believe is good for us? Mia Nacamulli gives the facts on fad diets.

When you see any diet pill or book advertised, pause your TV when the disclaimer pops up at the bottom of the screen. 100% of them have the same text at the bottom.

"Results not typical, your results may vary. This pill (diet, whatever) was found to be effective when combined with a diet and exercise program. Average weight loss in study participants was 1-2 pounds per week."

*_OR_* you could save money and just do the diet and exercise part of it and still lose 1-2 pounds per week.

Eat what you want, but in moderation. Also exercise is important, even if all you can do is walk around the block.

a relative of mine tried to get me to join him with a workout diet for getting in shape. Along with a heavy weight training routine he was talking about overhauling our meals every day. Breakfasts were to be high in protein and carbs, a small lunch and only salads and vegetables at night. While im sure that would have worked in the short run, who wants to live their lives eating like that. First rule of any diet: it has to be something you can enjoy or at least live with. If you have to force yourself to do it you will fade and end up hating to diet and exercise even more.

People were telling me for a while to go gluten free because of my autism, as if that was the only way to "cure" it or "improve symptoms."
Gluten free diets only help if you have a gluten sensitivity, which my doctor told me I don't have.
Also, what if I like myself the way I am and don't want a "cure?"

- Are you tired of diets that never work AND do not have any bacon in them?
- Is 'exercise' a curse-word that limits the time you have for stuffing your face with meat?
- Would you like a PERMANENT and TASTY solution to all your weight-related problems?

Let me recommend you my ALL-BACON-DIET! That's right: a diet with all-bacon, all-day, every day!

Are you too thin? Eat bacon and gain mass!
Are you too fat? Eat bacon and lose mass!*
Are you just fine? Eat bacon and feel great!

Still having doubts? How about some quotes** to soothe your suspicions:

"Eating bacon every day is the corner-stone of a balanced diet."
- US Surgeon General

"Bacon is great for keeping your heart healthy. I always eat bacon."
- Every doctor in the world

"Why even bother if it doesn't taste like bacon?"
- Martha Stewart

Act now and go get yours from a store near you!

*Requires strong faith and magic. Eating bacon may cause weight gain.
**Not direct quotes.

Love this! If something is too good to be true, than it most likely is! As a nutrition coach for digital nomads, it's hard to compete with people selling those "get thin overnight" diet plans. It takes time and effort to make a sustainable change, but in the long run, it's so much better for our physical and mental health! Thanks for sharing such an insightful and truthful video. :)

I did Adkins Diet for a year, and lost 70 pounds. The only downside I found, is once I hit the weight I wanted, and went back to eating little carbs with my meals again and my weight almost overnight kept growing and growing. In the matter of a month I grew 20 lbs, and I barely changed my diet, I just ate dessert more days and had the occasional cheeseburger.

I.e. People thinking they're suddenly allergic to gluten.

My mom and brother religiously and periodically go on the south beach diet even though as soon as they stop they ALWAYS gain the weight back. I have tried telling them this doesn’t work and the best way is to have a healthy lifestyle but they just don’t listen. It’s so frustrating because those types of diets are so bad for your body.

I have always listened to the back voice of my head that “balance” what we wat & “ exercise” is the ultimate solution for a good healthy life . NO SHORTCUT.

This is incorrect. It should have said "doctors and DIETITIANS" rather than "doctors and nutritionist." Anyone can become a nutritionist, even the person selling you the fad diet! Where as dietitians have a degree in nutrition, undergo internships, register in the state and nationally, in addition to taking continued education hours.

All you need to remember is this: Everything in moderation except for moderation 😉

So what I'm hearing is, use fad diets before a high school reunion for quick, easy, yet temporary weight loss?

If you ask 100 different "experts" to tell you what they think is the best diet or weight loss plan, you'll get dozens of different answers. Maybe that means that humans are incredibly sophisticated, diverse, and adaptive beings. There does not have to be *one* answer or diet that works for everyone. There could very well be many different diets that all work for certain person, and just because a certain diet works for one, doesn't mean it will work for another. At the end of the day, if your combination of nutrition and activity is helping you reach your goals and feeling healthy, it's the right diet for you. Some people find success cutting carbs, others find success counting macros, others find success going vegetarian, others try intermittent fasting. At the end of the day, to each their own. The only commonality with all weight loss plans/diets is that they need to create a calorie deficit. There are many, many, many different healthy ways to create that calorie deficit... so just pick one and see if it works for you.

I don't see many fat people wandering around my country post-war period, in general 70s-80s and even 90s. We barely had any food to eat and my mom who is 157 cm tall and was weighted 40kg in her 20s was called FAT. Upon the open of the economy to companies like Cocacola, we have had more foods to eat and then the outburst of obesity among people in all age categories. Sugar and fat are consumed excessively in daily basis. Sugar in milk, in yoghurt, in deserts and in all kinds of foods. Naturally made foods are looked down of due to bland taste. If you eat everything in moderation and take good care of your body by frequent exercise, you will eventually drop weight regardless of whatever diet you choose.

CICO (calories in vs. calories out)
IIFYM (if it fits your macros - (macronutrients))
TDEE (total daily energy expenditure)

This is all you need to know about dieting. Make sure to try your best to eat your daily micronutrients as well (vitamins/minerals). Eat fewer calories than your TDEE to lose weight.
