In the book, after Bader had got his pilots back under control, he sent 12 Group HQ a signal: "242 Squadron operational as regards pilots, but not - repeat not - operational as regards equipment." I haven't read the book since I was a pre-teenager, so I might have slightly mis-quoted. Just to make sure that the message was loud and clear up the command food chain, he sent a copy to Fighter Command as well.
Next thing, he received a phone call from a Squadron Leader at Group who tried to give him a roasting about the signal, saying the Group AOC was very displeased about it. Bader was having none of that and responded appropriately. Next day, he was summoned to Group HQ and was stood before the AOC, who wanted to know what was going on. Bader explained the situation at 242 Squadron and also mentioned the conversation with the officer the day before. That officer got transferred on the spot because when he had the conversation with Bader, the AOC had not yet seen the signal and therefore could not have been displeased with it. What did displease the AOC was a subordinate presuming to speak for him.
Bader's squeaking wheels got lubricated very quickly and a convoy of parts rolled in the gate. Bader then sent Group a signal: "242 Squadron now fully operational".

I really wish 242`s activities in France would get a lot more notice. They were involved in the "2nd BEF" plan I.E. they were sent to France AFTER Dunkirk, there right up to the end and treated like shit when they got back. "They were in France and had a bad time" dosn`t cover a fraction of it. It would seem that one of the things they lost in France was their former Squadron Leader who had to make it back to the UK seperately.
