The Breville Barista Express Impress and Barista Touch Impress are fantastic beginner home espresso machines. But if you want to further improve the espresso shot quality coming from these systems, you need to properly distribute and have proper puck prep! To do distribute on the Express Impress or Touch Impress takes a slight workaround, but luckily, Breville themselves have actually inadvertently created the perfect product to do so! So today, I show you how to get better shots with puck prep on the Breville Impress machines.

I bought a bottomless portafilter for my barista express impress because I liked the wooden handle... And that opened up the rabbit hole. God is it deep...

LOL "this hobble is an absolute rabbit hole..." ahaha

what's kinda important to note: The breville funnel is pretty much a straight copy of 3d printable designs done by people in the community, without any acknowledgement.

You can unscrew the spout on the stock Breville/Sage portafilter to gain extra 20mm of headroom.

This was exactly what I was looking for. I bought the express impress but want to up my shot prep. Only worry I have is when my husband goes to make a shot if I make the process even more lengthy! Looks like I’ll be the designated barista to avoid that lol!

Agreed, the dosing funnel is CLUTCH! Easily my favorite accessory for my Barista Pro.

Rabbit Hole: I hear you. I have been getting inconsistent results as expected being new at this but I don’t mind, I will eventually get it. This morning I pulled a fabulous espresso which I have never tasted before. I really did not do anything different except get up on the right-side of the bed. Uh oh I said, the rabbit hole begins.

I almost gave up trying to dose with the dosing funnel because the optical sensor was not recognizing the funnel and thus not allowing me to grind with it on the portafilter!! I now see that you can disable the smart dosing option to allow for a manual grind and this will finally allow me to use the funnel while dosing!! Eureka! I am trying to fix some channeling issues with my shots as they were causing some spraying of coffee and hope to fix with WDT method. Last thing, I have searched far and wide and it looks like Breville has discontinued their plastic dosing funnel, can you help me find one?? I am having a hard time locating a decent dosing funnel that won't break for my Barista Touch Impress, thanks!

Yes, very helpful. I am in the process of choosing a Breville espresso machine. I want to be able to do some prep and this answered my questions about whether I can use a WDS tool along with the Express Impress. I would also like to use a distributor tool that does leveling and a puck screen on top. Could you address those as well?

Defeats the purpose of do-it-all by that one very expensive, but awesome Touch Impress machine 😂. So far every puck I made came out super delicious with no manual intervention like this. Cheers!

Great video. Thanks. I've started using the Touch Impress for over a week and I like it. More so easy enough for my wife to make her latte before she heads off to work. I'm not keen on the stock PF that came with the Touch Impress. I have a bottomless PF but am looking for a better spouted PF that will work with the Touch Impress, e.g. insert the PF into the grinding shoot and activates the grind icon on the touch screen, then use the Impress tamping system. The stock basket has a slight taper and it's hard to use a puck screen without making a mess. Do you know of one that would work? thanks

1. Use the dosing funnel with the PF,
2. grind the beans with the dosing funnel
3. Remove PF with dosing funnel once grinding is complete
4. Use WDT
5. The use a 3rd party tamper like a Normcore
6. Then pull the shot

Can the above 6 steps be used with the impress touch?

Many Thanks

Hello I just purchase the impress machine! I am a “green pea” and only had my machine for 3 days, LOL! I noticed water in my drip tray every time I make my shot, is this normal or is something broken on my new machine?

PS I can’t wait to go down this rabbit hole, my husband and I are enjoying making coffee together❤!

Looking forward to your response and thank you for your time!

Aloha, “green pea”, LOL

I can’t get the portofilter into the grinder with my bottomless pf.

Great video! How do you set the grind time based on what the machine has figured out? Also, is there a need to put a top filter?

Hi, do you find the bottomless portafilter you used still allows for the auto tamper to work properly? I used an Amazon bottomless one in my barista touch impress and the auto tamper was a little “stuck” and I had to use more force to raise it again. Let me know about the one you used tho!

Perhaps remove the top layer (stainless steel grill) from the drip tray if you’re using the stock portafilter and dosing funnel? Is that an option that would work?

I am very interesting in buying the touch impress, but I actually want to do the necessary steps. Is it worth it to buy the impress if I do all of this? Or should I just get the regular barista touch? The big difference would be the tamping?
