I was watching an analysis that was called "When Ubisoft Wanted an Ace Combat" that told that the reason of why Ace Combat "worked" instead of falling off like other arcade flight games was, in short, "strong narrative, ordinance, and responsive controls".

I agree with that. But he ommited a big factor: the music.

I bet someone can come and say PW's OST it's more or less "over-average" casual arcade instrumental music with electronic sparkles here and there, because it might not be as complex/had the production resources as something like Armored Core 6, Final Fantasy, you name it. Hearing this in the void, without playing the game, they might be right.

Yet, when you play or even see the game, this song kicks... Different.

You don't feel it's an arcadey-feel-good music anymore. You feel like a pilot doing the coolest shit a pilot could do, fighting against all odds and yet coming on top of that. No fucks for realism, physics or even logic given: you just get inside PW's world in an instant.

Just try to play PW without Jose Pavli's music; the experience just falls off. I don't know much about music design, but I can recognize this right here it's straight good game design: The music helps to sell a solid narrative, and that solid narrative itself (hand in hand with game kinestetics) pays back giving meaning to the song. Just look at the first mission of F59 and tell me that, knowing that you were going to the Bering Strait furball, when you saw the Cascadian Mercs breaking into magadan airspace, chasing the tails of straggled C-17's and PK squads, you DIDN'T felt a strike of lightning in your nerves when the music kicked in with the "Showdown" leifmotiv. Tell me if you have felt that strike of lightning with no song over it.

The music smooths the experience, and the experience gives meaning to the music. It's a virtuous circle that lots of games aren't able to pull off, even with all resources of the world. That's something that can only be archieved with love, because without love for what you are doing, you just can't get obsessed enough to studying the shit out of what you are doing and get to know where's the stuff that matters.

My congratulations to Jose Pabli and PW's dev team. You have grew so much in these months and it shows here. You guys are the top reference for arcade flight sims, at least for me. Not even Ace Combat has been able to pull these kind of feelings out of me, and I played that game since I has been 7. Would have loved to be a backer in PW's and Dawn aerowar kickstarter campaign.

Mr. Pavli, you are a magician.

You somehow managed to turn me, A HUMAN, into an electronic warfare aircraft.

Because I am jamming on all frequencies 😉

Love the story this song tells:

0:00 begin mission
0:48 tunnel begins to get really tight
1:21 you hit the afterburners on your first straight and it's thrilling as hell
1:52 come back down from the speed high and focus up again
2:26 you're approaching the exit, get ready
2:40 final tube, hit the afterburners
2:56 you blast out of the tunnel and go full tilt vertical up into the air and take in the target-rich environment; meanwhile everyone on the ground is frozen, dumbfounded at what's happening
3:11 you release the first bomb
3:13 SPLASH

Me when I played Project Wingman: "There's something missing here. I'm not getting that true Ace Combat vibe."

This tunnel mission: "There it is"

Three years ago, I commented on Eversol's video of how awesome it would be to have an entire mission set in a whole tunnel...

*Suffice to say, I think FAN found it and got way too inspired.*

The only thing missing to this version is an angry WSO in background because you brought her with you.
