Russian history from Rurik to modern days:

💠 WHO ARE THE SLAVS?

So, who are the Slavs? Slavs are the largest ethnolinguistic group in Europe. Present-day Slavic people are classified into East Slavs (chiefly Belarusians, Russians, and Ukrainians), West Slavs (chiefly Czechs, Moravians, Poles, and Slovaks), and South Slavs (chiefly Bosniaks, Bulgarians, Croats, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Serbs, and Slovenes).

The early Slavs were a diverse group of tribal societies who lived during the Early Middle Ages (approximately the 5th to the 10th centuries) in Eastern Europe.

The first written use of the name "Slavs" dates to the 6th century when the Slavic tribes inhabited a large portion of Central and Eastern Europe.

What did the Slavs look like? This is what Procopius was writing about the Slavs: «They are tall and especially strong, their skin is not very white, and their hair is neither blond nor black, but all have reddish (auburn) hair. They are neither dishonorable nor spiteful, but simple in their ways". "Some of them do not have either a tunic or cloak, but only wear a kind of breeches pulled up to the groin." It is interesting that modern Slavic people are among the least red-haired in Europe with a usual frequency of less than a percent.

🎞How did the Slavs dress?

On the screen, you can see the typical Slavic outfit for men and women. The most used colors, as usual with anything Slavic, were red and white.

And here is the depiction of a Slavic warrior in the full armor. Traditional weapons of Slavic warriors were a large shield, sword, and short spear.

🎞The Slavs were famous for many things, and one of them was their system of beliefs. But this is a topic of our next lesson.

Interesting but too short for my taste. You start them at 500 AD . Does that mean that they arrived at that time from somewhere else? Or that they started to conquering their neighbour tribes? and growing at that time?
But I understand that your main interest is the language so it’s ok, good start :-)

Спасибо, Дарья! I’d like to see lessons on Russian achievements in space exploration, Russian “firsts” (such as by inventors and explorers), and the evolution of the press’s role in society.

That’s so cool! Thank you so much Daria! I would love to learn more about the history of Russia. My in-laws have Russian background, but I have learned from you more than I had known for the last 12 years about Russia and the Russia language. You are my angel! 🥰🥰🥰
