401k and Roth IRA are just types of tax deferred investment accounts. It depends what your money is invested in within the account. If you get an employer match you’re already winning. If it’s invested well, even better. This opinion is foolish.

This guy has no idea what he's talking about, 401k and roth ira doesn't have an inherent return, they're just tax deferred accounts. That's like saying a taxable brokerage account has only a certain return

Wait so you’re telling me these two people are talking about somebody who’s been living off 80 or $90, 000 a year for 30 to 40 years working and only has $250, 000 by the time they retire? If you were putting away 5% of your income every single year for 30 years you’d have over 150grand and with intrest nearly double that. Are we also supposed to believe this person doesn’t have any savings at home a car or anything else? How ridiculous

I get $11 an hour into my pension, that’s without me putting anything in. Our pension returns usually 9-15% a year. We’ve had a couple years of a loss but it’s rare. Join a Union. Get a pension, live better!

6% return? Depends on what the investment is

People think they’re getting a match? they are getting a match, tax deferral and interest. The tax deferral is a huge return on investment between 15-20%, the match is guaranteed 5% return mostly, and the interest is bonus. Tough to say you can beat that consistently.

If your getting to a 6% return on your IRA or 401k then you are terrible at investing or your manager is terrible.
You should be getting at least 9% easy.
Pensions get a 6% return.

Average stock market increase is 10 percent return. First Lie. How much does the average person invest by the time there are 65? Second lie, because without that number you have no idea what they made.

“People think they are getting this match”

No we are getting a match and it’s a 100% ROI.

Also these accounts are just tax advantage accounts, what we invest them in is how they perform.

Talk louder so you get more clicks I see you!

My colleagues get annoyed when I tell them exactly this and why I'd rather put all my retirement into real estate and crypto 😅

I’ve been saving already for 30 years and have well north of the number he’s talking about. It’s a tool. if you don’t invest enough, what else do you thinks going to happen? He says six percent like that’s a bad thing. Six percent is better than .25 percent in a checking or savings account. How much he think they’d have if they just put it into a bank?

Where the heck does he get a 401K get's only 6%

I'm getting taxed on ira required withdrawals...taxed on social security...taxed on small pension...

The average person doesn't invest as much when they are young which is why the average balance is so low. This guy wants you to invest in real estate, which is a good, but risky investment when you are living off of $80k-$90k. If your 401k is only earning 6%, then you are investing very conservatively. He wants you to risk it for the biscuit. Go for it, and when you default, he comes behind and scoops up your foreclosed properties.

Agreed retirement products have a very pathetic return

dewaldmatthysen

Yes, he obviously doesn’t know what he’s talking about. And on a self-directed Ira I can trade without having to pay capital gains.

audistik

Idk but he’s talking about the average, average people take out of their 401k, shocking, average people invest into very low risk areas, shocking, average people start thinking about their future too late.

jayosorio

He’s math doesn’t seem right, but we are talking about the average.

who told this guy that they will live the rest of their life off a 401k????

Yeah... that's why Dave Ramsey recommends putting 15% of your income into investments. Like 401k and roth ira. (Then once you maxed out the tax benefits going to stocks or realistate).

To have only 250k at age 65. You have to contribute only the company match on the 401k AND leave that with the company (instead of moving it to a rollover account) if you're no longer with that company and that company has your money they have no reason to invest it wisely, so they won't.

Also you don't really make money on non-school/knowlege investments if you have less than $100k. But once you do it grows faster and faster.

That's another reason why Dave Ramsey reccomends 15% is so that you hit that $100k mark asap to get your investments working doe you.
