This isn't about the Penguins, but that boxed set of Tolkien behind your left shoulder is the same set my mom bought me when I was in the 5th grade. It was those books that turned me into a lifelong reader and a book lover. I still have the books, I wish I still had the box.

This was another fascinating tour Steve, but my gosh, you always make me feel so uneducated with the range of your reading!  I feel as if I need to start reading all those ancient Greek and Roman writers as soon as possible!

I loved “A Hero Of Our Time” when I was a teenager. I agree on the translation issues, especially when it come to classics. I mostly read in Russian. 📚😊 Enjoying your videos a lot! 👏

The translation of Lermontov had some pretty rusty language, but the humour still shined through clear as the misplaced mermaid! Chekov still needs a hearty edition, that dude's prolific & nowhere is his complete work to be found (except that now out of print edition from way back when)

You're lucky to have the politically correct Penguin classics with the black spine. In France, most pocket classics have white spines.

I remember at school and later (much later) having the problem that when translating a text from Latin or later Classical Chinese that in my mind I had a cloud of meaning (and references and understandings) that were not linear nor easily amenable to being written down in the target language. As you say you need to know the resources of the target language to call on.
