I came across Ma Rainey when I learned more about Bessie Smith, and some of the other earlier Blues/Jazz vocalists like Alberta Hunter or Sippie Wallace. Rainey was Bessie Smith's mentor for a long time, ever since Bessie Smith was hired as a dancer for one of Rainey's traveling venues. Rainey was a darker skinned Black woman, calling the shots, and being seen out in the spotlight. That had a huge impact on Bessie Smith throughout her entire career.

Enjoyed your review. I saw Fences and The Piano Lesson performed on NY stage I'm looking forward to seeing TPL made into a film. I loved me some Ma Rainey's Black Bottom! Great period piece. The playwright August Wilson, George Wolfe's direction, entire cast, choreography, music, costumes, hair and makeup, set design. The whole shebang. It was all magnificent. Viola and Chadwick both deserve Oscar noms and wins. Recommended viewing.

Viola Davis DEFINITELY deserves an Oscar nomination, but if Chadwick Boseman doesn’t WIN, there’s something wrong and corrupt in Hollywood. He gave the performance of a LIFETIME. Even if they give it to him posthumously, he’d still deserve it, if he was still here. He has several award winning monologues, but there’s one in particular that’s so POWERFUL and HEARTBREAKING at the same time I’m in tears. Where did you get the shirt? I need one. Ma Rainey! BOY! That's a whole dissertation! The framing of the story was brilliant, the acting was incredible. I loved the touches from the different screen angles and the symbolism in certain actions like Levee checking the door. I mean, I need a whole DIGGING DEEPER SESSION on this movie. EXCELLENT. I did see the plays ago with Whoopi Goldberg as Ma Rainey, Charles Dutton as Levee, Anthony Mackie as Ma’s nephew. The live production was great. I too miss live theater, but glad Wilson’s work is coming to screen for people to see. There’s not a bad performance in the movie but hope people talk about the themes and think about them. The monologue of the leftovers by a Toledo is powerful and shouldn’t be overlooked.

I thought the movie was great, but of course the stage play is better for me. I love the fact that they used Ma’s voice . I love how they displayed how black entertainers had to be demanding to get what they deserved. If you didn’t, your music was taken from you. Great movie!

My last semester I took the History of US Pop Culture and you’re right. Pretty much everything was stolen from black artists. I was surprised that my class was an eye opener to more of a history in black culture.

It is so Amazing. That God speech hit my soul.
I love how August tapped into the anger we have for white america and then we turn that hate towards eachother.
There's a great movie called "Goodbye Uncle Tom" that will really hit home too. Its on YouTube.

It was a good adaptation of a play. It had a theater feel that I enjoyed; very well done. Great acting! I love Glynn Turman aka Toledo. Nice intro song, lol. Thanks for the review.
