We've had leaks and rumors surrounding the new Apple TV for many months, and we finally have a new one.. which SUCKS! Thankfully.. This is NOT the one from all of the leaks!

In this video, I discuss the new Apple TV 4K 6 with all of it's new specs and features.

I also take a look at the performance of the old Apple TV compared to this new one, which is quite embarassing.

I then go through a bunch of Apple TV leaks that never got fulfilled, and explain why I think there will be an even better Apple TV coming soon!

After checking benchmarks of the A10X, from what I understand, only the gpu is faster than A12. For all other benchmarks, the A12 is around 25-30% faster. And since all the decoding of H264/H265 is done with dedicated co-processors of sorts, maybe the gpu is not as useful as you believe in Apple TV scenario?

As for a next generation model more powerful able to run triple A games, if Apple really wants to compete with the big boys, this box will be priced accordingly. This is not what I am looking for in streaming box.

So, for me, AppleTV 4K is a nice upgrade.

I think the next iteration of this hardware will not replace this current product but complements it and at a price over $300.

That makes a lot of sense. Having a unified base in silicon and software architecture benefits the entire ecosystem. A M1 across all platforms makes it far easier for Apple, developers and consumers to get the most out of the ecosystem.

I think they used the A12 to keep that price at $200.

We may get the upgraded version when we get the powerful macs.

I agree with your predictions but I’m still replacing my current 4K with this new one. I’m looking at the upgraded specs and they’re enticing enough to make the switch. Specifically the hdmi spec upgrade although the increased CPU performance is an added plus. The Apple TV Pro/Arcade seems like it’ll be almost entirely game focused which tells me it’s new features and functionality won’t anything I’m looking for and I’m assuming it’ll come with an increased price tag. Of course the added memory, faster processor and storage might change my mind.

If they do end up putting an M1 chip in the next revision of the Apple TV then what you have is a scaled down Mac Mini. With that thought in mind why not scale this gaming system up so it's more like the Mac Mini and fork off tvOS into gameOS. It still runs tvOS like functionality but has added gaming enhancements that can take advantage of the M1.
