It’s time for BMW EV vs ICE head-to-head! Mat’s sat in a true BMW behemoth, the X7 M50i, and he’s lining up against the all-electric iX 50!

Trust us, this one is going to be close…

Starting with the X7, it’s powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can deliver 530hp & 750Nm of torque. It comes equipped with all-wheel drive as well as launch control, and it tips the scales at an almighty 2,490kg!

However, the iX isn’t exactly a slouch! Its two electric motors put down 523hp (just 7 less than the X7), and it’s actually up on torque, producing 765Nm! It’s slightly heavier though, weighing in at 2,520kg.

So, they’re pretty even, but does electric have what it takes to bring down petrol? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

I'm guessing that aerodynamics play a big role here, X7 is a brick, and the iX is surely optimized for airflow around the car as much as possible, like all the other EVs.

I was sure the drag race would go exactly the opposite way. With the EV jumping ahead at the start, followed by getting reeled in at higher speeds.

Would love to see the iX vs the X5, maybe also throw in a Tesla Model X, Audi Q7 or Mercedes GLE. Should be more fair considering weight and dimensions.

Hey:) The braking limit depends on the grip that the tires can produce. That grip is mostly up to the tires themselves, the weight of the car, suspension, weight transfer and the abs system. I dont think the regeneration has anything to do with this. Your limiting factor is grip. All brakes that work correctly and haven't overheated, should anyways be strong enough to lockout the tires. meaning the regeneration has 0 effect on brakes at that point. Great vid!

I love that you use stat screens more regularly now. But ALSO include the engine! V8 4.0L for example. or 2xelectric motors....

I believe it’s the aero that gives the advantage to iX. The frontal area is smaller and gaps are much better closed on iX.

EV speed limit is to protect the batteries from continuous high load. it could go much faster, but you would quickly fry the batteries under peak load for such a long time. There is a HUGE difference between continuous power output at 125mph vs 155 mph as air resitence is portional to cude of velocity.
