To think this masterpiece of a song only reached 67 in the US charts is mind blowing to me! I sometimes think Princes lyrics went straight over some peoples heads. This is probably one of Prince's most misunderstood songs ever. 

This is one of my favourite Prince songs because of the lyrics. It is just a beautiful and well balanced song solely for the meaning. I understand this song to be about someone wanting to have an intimate connection with their partner on every aspect, so not only a lover but a best friend. The way he’s singing it almost sounds like desperation or pleading for the intimacy he desires so much to feel with this woman.
He’s aware of all of these things that a woman would likely do and he’s willing to do just about anything for her to be with her. I like how he mentions hair which is directly a feminine connotation since women are likely to have longer hair than men and he appreciates the feminine qualities about her. And of course when he mentions crying with her he knows that women are emotional creatures and he so desperately wants to show her that he’d be the best companion for her, that he’d cry and show emotions with her. Like with that girl that you tell EVERYTHING to? Someone you don't mind changing in front of, sharing clothes, even makeup with? That's what Prince is singing about: How women are really close to each other in an intimate way... sometimes closer than to the guys they're with. He's asking if he was her "girlfriend", would she then share those kinds of things with him? I love it... it's deep! The lyrics are intelligent, creative and brilliant. Plus, he probably knows that women would love to hear their man say something like that. Again, all about intimacy.

Prince's engineer Susan Rogers told Uncut that this song was one of those rare times when Prince asked her what she thought. She added: "I said I had never heard a man say that before, and women want to hear it."

This song proves to me that Prince was so far ahead of his time, yet again! At the time some people didn’t understand what he as conveying and even now some of the lyrics have been misinterpreted at times, with some even saying ‘Is he gay?’, ‘Is he wanting to be a woman?’ and similar comments that I have read. People probably would have had a better chance at understanding this song and not make any incorrect sexual biases about the subject matter if Prince would have named this song "If i Was u'r Best Friend”.

If you actually listen to the lyrics you will know exactly what he is saying and I truly believe this song wasn’t appreciated until years later. Sorry about the rant but I just cannot say enough about this magnificent song!
