Measuring Earth's Magnetic Field

In this video the magnitude and direction of the earth's magnetic field is measured at West Lafayette, IN (40.4259 N, 86.9081 W)).

It seems the compass needles are reversed, since the red pointy end should point towards the geographic northpole, or towards a magnets south pole (opposite poles attract).

Compass doesn’t work with 2 opposing fields. It’s a single pole horizontal plane instrument for measuring concentric circles inside a field.

Excellent video. Thank you. I have three compasses. All of them stick and will not give a clean reading when I rotate them 90 degrees to the horizontal as shown at 1:40 of your video. I would love to learn how to get the same compass you use in the video, or how to find a compass that won't stick when rotated 90 degrees. I have tried tapping gently on each compass, moving it up and down in all directions, etc., but when I do that the needle just moves to what appears to be a random position. Thanks again.

How can I energize the electrons in the Earth's core by using a six volt dry cell battery .put both the anode and the cathode in PVC pipes to separate the wires maybe the cathode deeper or the anode in one spring and the cathode in another volcanic hot spring .please tell me I'm going up to lassen in CA and try it or should I just put in a cathode.and is six volts to much will it skip to infinity or turn the electrons into protons .so u more want to replied soon thank you
