This is just another example of why creating emotional, hands-on experiences in real-life learning environments, along with the need for patience and effective communication in caregiving and teaching, plays a pivotal role in the progress and growth of nonspeaking autistic children, such as Michael. The challenges of transitions, communication, and emotional regulation are intricately interconnected. These challenges in communication and emotional regulation are typical aspects of every child’s ongoing developmental journey as they mature. While it’s common for most children, whether they are autistic or neurotypical, to display emotional outbursts when their desires aren’t met during transitions, what sets autistic young children apart, especially those who are nonspeaking, is their unique struggle with comprehending verbal language and the privilege of being able to verbally express themselves. This challenge can significantly contribute to emotional dysregulation, impacting them differently than neurotypical children who can quite literally, self-advocate. Despite his language challenges, Michael has consistently demonstrated an impressive ability to transition smoothly and display a higher level of emotional control compared to his peers, especially when communication is established. Over the years, I’ve come to recognize that his big reactions haven’t, primarily, stemmed from wanting to get his way; rather, they arise from his challenge in processing and comprehending situations. When his communication needs are met, his natural inclination has always been to accept and, at times, even seek compromises.
