Well at least there was no confusion about whether Nero was his or Vergil's.

Also, during the events of DMC5, Dante tried to stop Nero from confronting Urizen, because he knew about his identity in M10.

Dante probably saw Nero's struggle with his Devil self in DMC4.
So to Dante, telling him that his father was a merciless man that caused TWO catastrophic events would probably cause Nero to take matters into his own hands and "stop" Vergil. And since Dante was the first one to "stop" Vergil, he knew first hand how awful of a feeling it was.

Nero spent the entirety of DMC4 going through an identity crisis. I dont think Dante wanted to give him another.

I think he was probably trying to spare Nero’s feelings. Why make him feel even worse knowing his father mutilated him for the sake of power? Dante probably also hoped he could deal with all of this without telling Nero, like when you try to fix a problem before anyone can find out the truth behind it. It’s not a mature thought process but it’s Dante.

Virgil, at this point, is a mass muderer. Maybe dante was trying to shelter him from the fact that his dad is

it’s more like he probably assumed Nero would stand in defence of his father or be crushed by him dying before they got to knew each other for real. Either way it’s kinda difficult to say that your brother is an abominable demon king mass murderer who is also a father to a person you care about, it’s not as easy as to write it in the script

I do want to add that Dante did say he wanted to keep the Yamato in the family back in DMC4. And let Nero keep it at the end of the game

Nero: Lemme guess, I'm deadweight?
Dante: Right again

Usually games get the interruption part of a conversation wrong. They leave a gap between the person stopping and the other person speaking. They did really well with that here. This felt like a genuinely upsetting conversation.

I also think Dante saw how hot headed Nero was and how he was prone to bad decision making. Telling him about who his father was may have, in a way, inadvertently made a literal second Vergil.
Not highly likely, but we see through DMC 5 that when he's at his lowest, Nero is just like his old man.

Question for you: who is a better dad Virgil or Dante?

let’s also not forget he’s been depressed since DMC 3 (chronologically) so he can’t even Process his bro is back

like you said it was a gut feeling, I think his feeling was just confirmed when Virgil addressed Nero like he knew him and thats when he finally knew that it was true so of course he'd be more hesitant now that he knows but at the same time he can't make the same excuses to Nero so he finally dropped the bomb on him if it means he would stay out of the way cause deep inside he cares, Nero is like one of the few good things that came to their life knowing their demon blood is destined for good and perhaps Nero would be spared from their fate which is why they didn't bring him along the cutting of the Qlipoth tree. He is their hope.

I always found it funny when Nero tries to get in that "Well you can shove that-" before Dante cuts him off 😂😂😂

Dante is literally the cool uncle that had responsibility thrown on him while the responsible one is being semi selfish

Then again in devil may cry 4 or 3 Dante also knew based on how Vergil's sword reacted when the Yamato became whole and went to Nero to give him more power

I don’t blame Dante for not telling him tbh. Throughout Dante’s life he’s experienced nothing but loss because of being a Sparda. Having Nero be closely involved with that would’ve risked him losing the happy life he was having with Kyrie, in Dante’s eyes. I think he just wanted to spare Nero the trauma. We see how he’s really protective of the younger generation (Patty, who he also tried to spare from trauma by making sure she didn’t see any demons when possible)

Maybe, here's my answer. Dante's mess was Vergil and he doesn't want his nephew to get caught in it.

Especially since then Nero would know he had a cool uncle ahead of time.
