Hey, guys! I'm switching things up this week and giving you a simple breakdown of what hypertension or high blood pressure is all about. A very common question I get from my patients is, what is high blood pressure or what is hypertension and they are the same question! Doctors refer to hypertension as the silent killer and for a good reason! High blood pressure increases risks of many diseases and shortens your life significantly. I also discuss the new hypertension guidelines and how they impact your high blood pressure treatment. Many hypertension treatments are available and need to be discussed with your family medicine doctor. I also touch upon high blood pressure causes as there are natural ways to treat hypertension. High blood pressure is a complex topic with almost no symptoms and if there's anything I missed in the video, hit me in the comments section. Please share this video with your friends and family and give it a like! Stay healthy and happy!

My mom had hypertension but when she was diagnosed she said a big no to medication against it (she's the anti-pharma type) and she started going on long, intense walks and it has improved.

My dad died from extreme hypertension disease of the heart. He had a massive heart attack at 38. He wouldn’t listen to a doctor nor did the doctor try hard enough to get him to realize the severity of hypertension. I obviously have a predisposition for this. I try to leave a healthy lifestyle at 23. So far I’ve been good. Dr. Mike, I really appreciate your videos. Videos like this allow people to live a longer, healthier life.

I didn't take hypertension seriously because I felt fine, plus I was 25 when I was diagnosed. I wished I listened. I now have hypertension, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension. It's so important to educate people on this misunderstood and dismissed health issue. I had a stroke at 39

Doctor Mike, can you make a video about depression and anxiety/ mental disease. And what scientifically happens to your body while dealing with this subject. Also what you can do to prevent and treat this problem. Thank you!

I'm a public speaking instructor at a university in NYC. I must say that you are an excellent speaker - I would show my students your video to emphasize the importance of vocal variety during an informative presentation. You illustrate a lot of the tactics I teach my students - pitch changes, punching out the important numbers in statistics, even using your fingers to show two items on a short, you get an A!. I've been monitoring my blood pressure and have been obsessed with why it has gone up - since I do everything correct, eat well, limit sodium, exercise, etc. Seems like getting older is the culprit - but I'm fighting it as much as possible. Blood pressure really changes dramatically during the day, and the people in doctor's offices never take your blood pressure correctly. I have to give them lessons in how to have me sit for five minutes with my feet on the floor and my arm elevated. That's why I keep tabs on my blood pressure at home. Thanks for your channel.

My dad passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage, which we were told was caused by high blood pressure and hypertension. None of us had any idea, including himself.☹️ This was a great video, thanks for sharing. ❤️

One big problem I've had with blood pressure measurement is that I get a little agitated when I'm at the doctors office. I have my own blood pressure meter at home. I sit down, sit still and relaxed for 5-10 minutes, and then measure. Typically, it is between 100/60 and 120/80. But when I'm at the doctor's, it is usually at 130/80-140/80.

I was diagnosed when I was 16 (my pressure was 150/105) and I'm on medication since then. Well, I'm 30 now 😅 For all the people out there like me, I feel ya 😅🤗 Thank you dr. Mike for clearing it up for those who weren't familiar with the topic 😊

This video is very helpful. My mom has to take medication for high blood pressure and she has diabetes. The sad part is s that she is reluctant to take her medicine and doesn't want to adapt to any of the lifestyle changes we want her to. I really hope she comes around. This is a great video and really explains the condition for me. Thanks Doctor Mike.

Summary : Blood pressure is essentially how much push there is on the the tubes that carry blood around your body! If it’s high you won’t know about it but if its high for decades it can increase your risk of strokes and heart attacks! You should be checking your blood pressure annually if you’re 50+ especially since you wouldn’t have any symptoms!

Love what you’re doing with the channel mike ✊🏽✊🏽

Doctor Mike,

I’ve recently had a hypertension scare. I found out my bp was at stroke levels. I’ve changed my diet/lifestyle completely over the last 45 days and am now getting regular readings below 140/90 with meds. I’ve lost about 25 pounds, but I’m still in the 250 range. I want to continue my weight loss/health journey, but also improve my physical fitness. Hopefully to get off meds one day. What are some safe exercises I can do as I make my way down the road toward a healthy heart. I don’t want to overdo it and put myself in an unsafe situation.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Dr. Mike, I so enjoy your videos, truly informative!! I am 45 years old and have been on HTN medication for 17 years. You are so right when it comes to eating. I have notice eating badly significantly raises my BP, 143/90 with medication. One day to just one week of eating healthy drops my BP 120/80 with medication. I have learned it has to be a healthful diet coupled with medication for me. Medication alone will not control my BP. Thank you for sharing this content 😊🙏🏽
