We use sponges and dish rags, the rags get a kettle of boiling water poured over them in the kitchen sink (with the stopper in) a couple days a week (3 at least). Just put on your water kettle and pour on over, it disinfects instantly. Put a tiny bit of dish soap on them before you pour, or not. Up to you. This way IMO you can use them. But yes, they get grimy so fast!
