One of the best tactical channels out there for real world situations, especially in cold weather climates.

I would want to add that certain camo patterns do make a difference. Back during the UCP trials(and MARPAT trials) it was noted that the most effective colors under NODs were tan, grey, black and white. White being highly reflective and "glowing", black being highly absorbing and "glowing" with tan and grey being very neutral/blending in with the background. Related to this, UCP is tan and (blue/green) grey. MARPAT added black element so that it might break up the shape of the wearer under nods so it wouldn't just be a perfectly neutral human sillouhette against trees, leaves, and dirt which all reflect differently. Camo like US Woodland and Vietnam Tiger Stripe really do appear different under NODs, even when NIR treated, because of the large black elements.

Nice!!!! Very helpful. They never taught us this in the navy, this knowledge can make the difference between life or death.

I'd be interested in seeing Desert Night camouflage if you've got any. I know it was already out of date in the 80s, but it'd still be cool.

Material, dye, and the condition all have a part to play in NIR compliance. Extremely 'salty' and starched M81 woodland is like staring at a spotlight under NVGs compared to an unissued and perfectly clean cut of the same pattern.

ESTDCU really deserves more appreciation, it’s such a beautiful pattern.

Here’s a genuine question Thor,

Do you feel that the internet and social media give an edge to an enemy.

I have noticed more and more over the years that military hardware, tactics, callsigns, gear is all transparent now. Does this make your job harder knowing that not only do you know what the enemy has but the enemy has what you have? And with all the media coverage and reports, do you feel it would be better to go back to radio silence as for as civilians are concerned?

I know this is a completely unrelated question. But during the "Don't Smoke" short I was wondering what arc lighter/e lighters, & coil based heating methods would look like on thermal? I know ideally you wouldn't use it at all, the heat from the cig will still f you over anyways. But Im curious about alternative heating elements could be viable/safer alternatives.

Can you test will laundry detergents or fabric softeners show in NVGs? In Finland we were told not to wash our combat clothing at home because of this.

The untreated sections blend in better with the background. The treated sections are far darker than the surroundings which can be a dead giveaway.

NIR treatment is mostly for reducing thermal signature. Many non NIR compliant clothing materials blend in with the surroundings with night vision but won't reduce thermal signatures.

Actual reason why old woodland patterns like m81 and dpm exc exc had black blotches. The other colors turn into a single flat green with the black blotches still visible, still disrupting the the human shape.

Could you test if it actually makes a difference if you wash the clothes with detergent that has bleach and/or whitening agents vs a detergent that doesnt have these ingredients.

Can you test Finnish army m05 clothes?
