Yes on Circe! It's such a fantastic book, though it is quite slow and character driven which not everyone likes.

I am so happy for you that you liked "The Raven Boys" that much.

I have read 5 books in January.
"Zoo City" by Lauren Beukes (3.5/5). This is somewhat of a Urban Fantasy taking place in the near future of Johannesburg. I really like the setting but the plot is sometimes a bit strange.
"The Last Wish" by Andrzej Sapkowski (5/5). This is the first of the Witcher books and more of a collection of shorter stories than one novel but the stories are connected by a narrative framework. I love Geralt so much.
"Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman (4/5). Yay, Urban Fantasy by Neil Gaiman. I love his work and this is a very typical Gaiman style story.
"Star Wars: From a certain Point of View" (3/5). This is an anthology with 40 stories retelling the original movie from different characters' perspectives. I am not that big of a Star Wars fan (this book was a gift) and I think a fan maybe can appreciate it more.
"Traitor to the Throne" by Alwyn Hamilton (4/5). This is the sequel to the YA fantasy "Rebel of the Sands". I liked this one better because I liked the villain a lot more. This takes place in a desert setting and the lovey dovey stuff is not prominent in the story.
And I read a majority of Stephen King's "The Stand" (but I finished it yesterday, so not part of my January reading)

I am very happy I enjoyed all the books I read to some extent.

From what little I remember of Raven Boys, I absolutely agree with you!
At times I was like: “uhm okaaay, let’s just go with it” but it was so complex and the characters sooo real! It’s why I can’t wait to reread the first 2 and read the last 2 I hadn’t read :)

I didn't really like The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. I listened to it on audiobook which may have been a mistake and, like you mentioned, I found it to be really tedious how we would go through the same things in his life over and over every time he was reborn

Hey Theresa, loved the video!! Have you watched the film The Secret of Roan Inish?? It's about selkies!!!! Totally got reminded of it (though I haven't watched it for years) when you mentioned that first book! I think the motivation behind the selkie women is a little better portrayed in the film than in this book you mentioned; maybe it would help you make more sense of the book if you watched it? Idk! xD **tho obv the film is unrelated to the book!! other than the selkie thing

Die Toten vom Djatlow-Pass: Eines der letzten Geheimnisse des Kalten Krieges
is the best book about the Dyatlov Incident i've read so far. i'm not sure about the translation because i've read in original, but the book is great. it also has pictures and is still haunting me, one year later

I just read The Prestige by Christopher Priest. I don't know if you know the book or the movie adaptation, but the atmosphere and some themes reminded me of The Thirteenth Tale in a way. It's quit different still, but since you loved The thirteenth tale you might maybe be interested in The Prestige

I've always been interested in the Dyatlov Pass Incident, namely the conspiracy theories surrounding it. So I might check that book out.

After watching this I am even more convinced that Claire North's books really aren't for me. I read 'A Sudden Appearance of Hope' by her last year and really did not like it. It dragged so much, was unnecessarily convoluted and just all over the place in terms of what genre it was trying to be (and not in a good genre bending kind of way). "Super frustrating" sums up the experience pretty perfectly.

I loved Circe but I hated the part where her son is around, I was so bored!
