Do grades really matter in nursing school? Is it okay if you're a "C" or "B" student? When do grades matter in nursing school or college?

Struggling nursing students often wonder whether grades are really important in nursing school. The short answer to the question is yes and no.

Grades don't always predict how well you'll perform on the job. Some students struggle with test anxiety, or they simply learn better while working with their hands in the real world.

On the other hand, grades can impact many things in nursing school. Watch the video or read the article below for a complete breakdown of the importance of grades in nursing school.

I'm always studying!!! I always vary from As and Bs. People say I'm super smart but they have no idea how much I study, how nervous I get, and how much I doubt myself during exams!

*grades don't matter. what matters is how you perform in real world. i know and worked with alot of nurses who are super smart but when its time to work they are LAZY AF who endorsed their left over tasks to the next shift. So annoying!*

I don't think grades dictate how effective you'll be, but better grades usually indicate a better understanding of the material.

All A’s would be good, but passing The Nclex would be greater. I pass the nclex last October. I been on two interviews.None of them asked about grades.

Grades matter if you're planning on futhering your education...like grad school. Always keep your options open...stay on the "A" team.

Grades absolutely matter. The students that studied the hardest in nursing school usually retained the most, not just for NCLEX, but also for real life nursing. It also keeps your options open for graduate school if becoming a CRNA or NP is of interest to you or if you're interested in a new grad RN residency. I'd imagine the myth of the super new grad nurse being a C student was a coping mechanism, honestly. I've never seen it in real life.

My nursing school uses GPA to place you into your final transitional clinical site. You get to put in your top 5 and they go from highest GPA to fill spots. Lower GPAs don't usually even get one of their top 5s. I graduated with a 3.95 and I swear it was the only reason I got a job in my specialty of choice right out of nursing school. A nurse with a lower GPA might be a very kind person but if my family member were critical I would want the nurse who studied like she would be caring for her own family and wasn't out partying every weekend in nursing school

Grades matter. Especially if you plan on going to grad school. Most graduate programs require you to maintain a B MINIMUM in the (graduate) classes. So it’s better to learn how to master the material right from nursing school.

When it time for graduate programs here in Western Australia. Every hospital preferred those with work experience as a AIN/PCA, enrolled nurse, phlebotomist even; then those with top grades.

I realize that theory oftentimes doesn't really prepare you as much as the actual hands on practice

PS; I’ve also been a PCT for 3 years prior to BSN school so that helped me a lot in the program too. I particularly decided to be a PCT first before attempting nursing school to know if it really is for me. BECAUSE of my grades which got me my full scholarship and extra money (I really didn’t need lol), I completely quit work and had the time to focus completely on getting those A’s while in school so yeah, I’m proud of myself and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, work hard for those A’s so that you can at least fall on B’s. Grades matter.
