MX Linux Are Making A KDE Edition!

MX Linux make one of the best midweight distributions around which features the XFCE desktop by default. I was pleasantly surprised to see they are working on an edition that features the KDE Plasma desktop! It's currently in beta but I couldn't help myself from taking a look as KDE has become my favourite desktop as of late. I'm also a big fan of MX Linux and how they make simple to use stable distribution that is enjoyed by many Linux users. Combining KDE with MX Linux is a brilliant move and something I'll be keeping a close eye on as it approaches it's final release.

Good review...and this is the first time I've heard about MX-KDE spin...looking forward to putting this beta in a VM and testing it out. Thanks Tyler!

I tried it out the Final Version and it worked good apart from when making a Folder Shared using SAMBA. The system-config-samba utility was not installed as it is in the xfce version. Installed it and all worked fine. Quite liked it.

It's cool to see them returning to there roots. SimplyMepis was one of the best KDE builds back in the day. It was my chosen OS

The cinnamon desktop in the testing packages is quite nice, btw if you like kde, have a look at Mageia 8 alpha, freeze date for the beta should be July 18th.

Thank you for this. After your previous MX video I was wondering why I'd left it. But I didn't want to leave KDE Manjaro. This is my reason to go back to MX Linux.

Tyler, you should post your hardware in the comments. Your machine seems to work very well with most of the distros you try. I’ve yet to have a smooth experience with any Linux I’ve tried, but I keep trying.

Very interesting! Give us more videos about this distro, it can be a huge success.

thanks for the vid Tyler. I suppose it's nice to have an option using qt, but really 700mb+ is too much, perhaps once the mx team rolls out their final release version it will be lighter. I've always liked the Trinity desktop and it's very light, maybe the MX team might consider it or LXqt instead.

Looking juicy and it will be nice to see the end product.

Have you checked out the Redmondesque respin of MX Linux 19?

Needs to be an official MX Linux Cinnamon edition. That's what I'm running. Very few issues.

Suddenly MX Linux became more appealing

Just open the System Settings. You don't need to open individual apps for "Look&Feel", "Desktop", and such.

RC1 of Mx-Linux 19.2 KDE AHS is awesome, buttery smooth. No problems what so ever. Its a Windows 10 killer.

MX Linux certainly looks interesting. I can't say I've got into KDE Plasma though, anytime I tried it I found it overwhelming with too many options! Interesting stuff about the amd tearfree option, I now have an AMD Radeon GPU in my system (running mint 20 Cinnamon), I can't say I've noticed any screen tearing though.

Good review!
I was using MX Linux XFCE for a few months until I found Marie (marie-desktop.com). It is Debian based too and uses cinnamon but it is still surprisingly very responsive. You should do a review of it.
I will definitely try the MX Linux KDE version

The MX panel is unique. I hope they put the KDE version in the same place. For people who don't like it, it's KDE, you can move it anywhere you want.

I'm with you, Tyler. I'm a fan of both KDE and MX... and this one has me pretty excited as well :) I usually go to look and feel through their system settings as it's the first thing in there :) My MX Xfce has a start up RAM of between 600 and 650 Mb, I suspect the KDE will be more in the 650 to 700 Mb mark based on my install of this last night on my Intel system. I also had theming issues (tried Sweet and Layan). I also found that VLC wouldn't work and that I couldn't get Online Accounts working in here (they do work in openSUSE Leap). But, it is a beta and the MX team are as professional as you can get so I expect most problems will be solved :) Kind of a pity they can't use the testing level of Plasma lol, but it is what it is :) Kudos to the MX team for getting this up and running :)
