Like genuinely it feels like a curse when you learn the difference exists.
Once you notice how everyone is doing something wrong you can’t unnotice it.

I am on my knees begging for people to learn the difference between impulsive and intrusive, as someone whose had intrusive thoughts.

Having learned this, I stand by that my cat has not yet attained sentience

Something can also be sapient without being sentient, such as AI in most cases of fiction and it could be argued that the most advanced of real AI is sapient.

Edit: When I say it can be argued I don't personally think that real AI is sapient, it's just I have heard people say that and I was trying to avoid backlash

Sentient plants, however, are scary, especially when you’re playing dnd and your friend eats some. Moss started taking over his mind.

I told my class "but animals are smart too" once...around 10 adults, more than 30 years ol each, start screaming at me... I lost a lot of faith in humanity right there...

I am dyslexic and those words are too similar.

I should point out, this distinction is relatively new? The word "sentient" was originally coined to mean human-level intelligence, because animals were not seen as sentient (sentient literally meaning intelligent)

As more evidence came in that animals were not, in fact, meat robots, we needed a new word to separate us from them (thus "sapient", or "wise")

As yet more research is done, there's even suggestions that sapience too might not be enough to wholly distinguish us from every other animal, and we will need yet another new word (most likely relating to abstract language; the only definitively non-animal trait we can say with near-100% confidence right now)

Sentience actually means not only to be able to perceive but to be able to perceive *and understand themselves*. A toddler is often not sentient, they wont realise when something theyre doing is failing because their body is in the way, trying to pick up an object that theyre standing on or similar. Quite a lot of animals are not sentient, but sentience is not a high bar to clear

Not gonna lie, i knew it was sapient, but so many people used sentient that I doubted my knowledge.

I’ve known this difference for years, but there was one instance where I was talking to someone and said sentient by mistake and they kept correcting me. I said sentient again because I don’t care enough to think about my words and just want to get through what I’m talking about and they interrupt me still! Again and again until I have to directly tell them to shut up already and just let me talk before I lose my train of thought. And now I hate this kind of person. You fight for a just cause, but innocent lives are tormented by the nuisance that is the pride you reserve for yourself simply because you know words. Congratulations, you know how to communicate more efficiently than others—how sapient of you.

For French people that clicked on this video, replace sentient by "conscient" and sapient by "savant". It's not a perfect match but I think it's the best translation you can make.

Isn’t sentience the ability to perceive oneself as a being? To be self aware? Have I really understood it wrong?
